Tracking Maned Woves at Serra da Canastra - Cerrado - Brazil
Episode 7 of the Instituto Pró-Carnívoros project series is about the 'Program for the Conservation of the maned wolf - Canastra Wolves'.

It is in the region of the Serra da Canastra National Park in the interior of Minas Gerais that the Projeto Lobos da Canastra was born in 2004. The region is one of the largest conserved areas of Cerrado in Brazil and there the wolves still find refuge.
.
Seeking to know more about the ecology, behavior, health and other aspects of the life history of the maned wolf the Project gathered much of the information collected about the species throughout its distribution area.

Researchers climbed mountains, descended valleys, followed trails, captured, marked and monitored the wolves, following them along dusty roads or through satellite signals and images of photographic traps. They collected blood and ticks to understand about the health of wolves. They collected feces to know their diet, their stress rates by the hormones extracted from them. They tirelessly put out fires in the Park, rescued animals, returned wolves to their natural habitat, established partnerships with the community, reduced conflicts with rural producers building henhouses and opened themselves to dialogue, improving the perception of the maned wolf. They brought scientific knowledge to properties where no television existed, through film sessions. They even went to classrooms, developed awareness campaigns and contributed to the dissemination of information.

New findings allowed progress in the conservation of the species and proposed strategies to improve its situation. Today the maned wolves are accompanied at a distance by the information that the team receives from the community's network of friends. And they prepare for the 5th phase of the Project new investigations and actions to maintain the Canastra as the fertile land of the wolves.

For almost a month we showed you where the lobos do Pardo walk and talked about Pimenta female, a maned wolf with a living area of 50 km2!
The good news is that Pimenta female is with puppies. By the movement shown by the data from the necklace, the birth was registered on 08/06. The researchers of the Project lobos do Pardo don't know the number of puppies because the mothers are very sensitive and, therefore, they don't approach the burrow.
The problem is that the health of this female maned wolf of age estimated of 7 years old was always a little weakened! So, the project team follows her with attention, even more in this delicate period. As her collar started to present problems, the researchers had to make an emergency capture campaign to evaluate her health and reprogram the equipment, which allows following her at a distance in this important period with new cubs.
The procedures were carried out with all the safety and care that the occasion demands, following the recommendations of professionals of the health area!
Now, we can continue following Pimenta's next steps, hoping that she can create this offspring with health and safety!

They were super well received and cared for by @zoobrasilia and now they have gone to @parquevidacerrado to integrate the rehabilitation and release project, together with Caliandra. A big thank you to these two institutions for their efforts to make this moment a reality!

''Today we are pleased to share the story of this animal that makes us happy for the opportunity to walk beside it.
The Canastra Wolves project team set traps in the Serra da Canastra National Park on an afternoon in October 2013. A storm of lightning was forming. The next morning, in the last trap we saw a big orange individual. It was a maned wolf, which weighed an incredible 33 kg. Its body measured 1.71 meters. He was 86 cm high from his wrist to his shoulder.
The wolf, almost eight years old, was equipped with a monitoring necklace so he could reveal details of his life. At the exit of the trap, he trotted out stepping firmly. It looked as if the ground was shaking. That wolf sent by lightning and that where he passed thundered, was called Bolt. When accompanying him, he showed a well-established routine inside the park. Sometimes he would come down the mountain to eat fruit. It was a dangerous path going down and up a steep rock wall.
In July 2014 a female was captured in the Bolt area. Rose had milk on her tits. He was suspected to be the father, since wolves have low tolerance to intruders in their territory. Days later Bolt was recaptured in the same place. In the coming weeks the monitoring confirmed that they were a couple. And Bolt was yes the father of three little wolves. Later that year, a fire in the park burned down their entire area. Bolt and Rose were able to save themselves, but they lost their cubs.''
BOLT'S SAD INJURY.
''In March of the following year, Bolt started to behave differently. After a month with very little activity, he began to explore areas that did not belong to his territory. Four months later in his recapture, it was found that he had broken a leg. It was a fracture in his hind leg that, although consolidated, made him limp a lot. This did not prevent him from doubling his area of life and increasing his daily movement. Even with limitations, it is the wolf with the largest territory and the highest rates of movement and activity for the species. Bolt resisted and circumvented adversities. Bolt is until today an example of obstinacy. A survivor. May his life serve as an inspiration to us all.''
