The Big Five of Asia - Brehm - 02-15-2017

"Big Five Asien" in its original german version, is a production of the german-french TV channel "arte". It contains 5 episodes including tigers, asian lions, rhinos, elephants and komodo dragons. Dont know which criteria were considered to call komodo monitors and asian lions (i would've prefered Gaur, saltwater crocodiles or even kamchatka brown bears) as part of asias big five, but its nonethless a fine production with stunning footage! To be honest, i liked the episode of komodo lizards the most, even a bit more than the one about amur tigers^^

Unfortunately, i couldnt found english dubbed versions and even english subtitles are scarce. Anyway, there is a lot of awesome footage to watch! However, list of the episodes with english titles can be found here: https://www.globalscreen.de/television.documentary.nature_wildlife/content/show/686175

And some youtube links of the original versions:

amur tiger - english subs available (even if its only automatically generated crap version)

komodo dragons - ger dub

Asian Rhinos - ger dub

Asian elephants - ger dub

Gir lions - english sub (automatically generated)

Some interesting (and funny) information according to the narration:

- Even amur tigers drag their kill to safe places
- Harsh conditions in the russian far east also have some inconspicuous advantages: snow keeps the meat fresh! Grin
- some amur tigers seem to be man haters (not eaters) - they destroy camera traps and other human related material... they like to keep the environment clean, i guess haha Grin
- komodo dragons are sometimes in disput with wild boars over carcasses - with latters dominating in lenghty confrontations
- the episode about rhinos also contains video material about the rare javan rhinos, but mostly plays in kaziranga
- episode about elephants shows a wandering elephant herd in borneo
- Gir lions don't live in prides like their african counterparts (due to prey size/environment), but still form small sex related hunting coalitions
- Adult sambars are ideal prey for 3-4 lions

Wild boar are mean suckers aren't they.

In Africa the big 5 changes upon location, the same definitely holds true with Asia as well.

Agree with you.The list is perfect if Gaurs or Saltwater crocs or Brown Bears instead Komodo dragon.

Yes why not ? But debatable... In Africa, you can find "the big five" in mutual interaction at the same place, and that, at different and still numerous parks (Kruger, Serengeti, Etosha, and so on...). In Asia, impossible. Either they were almost exterminated and live in a few privileged parks (asian lion, asian rhinos, tigers...), or they always have been living inside a specific place (Komodo dragons). Then we can discute about the big five identity, indeed why not the gaur, the brown bear, the indian buffalo, the saltwater croc, as we can discute about the big five in Africa: why the leopard and not the hippos, the Nile croc or even the iconic giraffe ?

First answer about a doubtful option by the german-french tv channel Arte: the reptiles are included among the big five (Komodo dragon). In Africa the big five are all mammals.

The choices are often debatable, even doubtful. In Africa "The big five" are an advertising slogan because before being there, all the travel agencies tell you that you will see them. Something impossible to plan as concerns the asiatic continent.

@Vinay :

About #3: Very smart from you to post an "Africa hunting" photo as concerns the buffalo. Bravo !

The Big Seven of India!

(Excluding leopards though, even in the African version, Hippos deserve the place amongst 5 most dangerous animals)
Unlike brown bears or Komodo dragons, they have actually lived in the same landscape until only bit more than hundred years ago, before the Indo-Gangetic basin of the northern plains got fully cultivated & settled...

One zoo-keeper told me that hippos are the most dangerous from all herbivores in captivity. Hippos never get used to the guy who feed them even after years and you cant never trust them, while elephants and rhinos get used to the people who feed them.
The reason why hippos were not included in the classical "Big Five of Africa" by hunters is that probably their trophies were not so valued for some reasons or maybe because their hunting was not so interesting and didn't represent a big challenge.

Among the big beasts in Africa, hippos are certainly the most dangerous ones. In captivity too. But the keepers also told that the elephant's memory isn't a myth. An offended elephant is a vindictive, resentful, animal. A lot of accidents happened because of that. I remember having read a book about "ups and downs" in Germany zoos. A story like a keeper having 6 candies for 7 animals. The aggrieved elephant never didn't forget and killed this keeper with him once.

About the "big five" , this distinction is quite subjective. Lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos and leopards make us evoked free animals in open big spaces (savannah !). The hippos ? Wallowed all over each other around or into muddy water points...  It isn't as flashy !
