[b]My Journey with Persian Leopards

[b]NP, NE Iran, following 12 days of efforts, collared and named Kaveh. 52 kg. Kaveh mainly lived along margins of the NP, rarely wandering into the park, perhaps avoiding other large males. But he was a great hunter. He looked playful when encountering humans, watching from ridge-lines. Sometimes he visited villages, but returned without causing any conflict.
He only once killed a dog, belonging to a local shepherd. He never committed dog/sheep depredation as long as collared. On 29 Feb 2016, Kaveh departed Iran, after walking 80km aerial distance, for Turkmenistan. He was stopped by Turkmen border fence, so established home range there.
After 3 years of no data, last week a weak leopard which killed 5 dogs/sheep in border, was captured. It was Kaveh. Kaveh's body was full of injuries, perhaps from battling another animal. Treatment failed, died yesterday at age 7. Inside stomach, a leather obscured duodenum.

^ The Leopard does not look 80 kg. More in the higher 60 + kg range.

Anyway, there was an average weight of Leopards in Kenya:

"63 kg as an average weight for males was also reported in Kenya (MEINERTZHAGEN 1938)"

67.5kg male leopard (Namibia, Africa)

"Saturday wasn’t much of a day off for Team 5 because we caught a leopard overnight at the Bergposten box trap.

Weighing in at 67.5 kg, the leopard was determined to be an adult male of sufficient size to collar. Samples were taken of his conjunctiva, saliva, capillary blood from his ears, arterial blood, and fecal samples. The Biosphere team was able to watch the entire process except for the initial immobilization darting at the trap. We did get to hear it, however, and at that moment it sounded like it was a 200 kg leopard!"

'Strawberry' leopard collared

"History was made last week when the first red leopard was collared by Gerrie Camacho of the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency, supported by a group of local people

The first images of this animal were taken in December last year. Since then, Camacho has been trying to track the animal in order to collar it. On January 7 the leopard was darted and sedated and the collar fitted.

Camacho said the male was about two years old and weighing in at 48kg."
