Survey - Top Ten Smartest Animal Species. - brotherbear - 11-25-2016
Intelligence cannot be measured with a measuring tape or a set of scales. Measuring intelligence is not an exact science. However, hunters, field biologists, those who hunt with a camera, and animal trainers can certainly find strong evidence of what animal is smarter than who. In your personal opinion ( without argument )... name them in order with the smartest being number one. Remember that we each have our own personal opinions. Here's mine:
1 - Whales and dolphins.
2 - Corvus ( such as crows and ravens ) and the African gray parrot.
3 - Chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan.
4 - Bears, baboons, and elephants.
5 - other old-world monkeys ( some I'm sure smarter than others ).
6 - new-world monkeys ( some I'm sure smarter than others ).
7 - Wolves, foxes, other wild dogs, and domestic dog.
8 - Cats, both big and small ( some I'm sure are smarter than others.
9 - Hyena, seals, walrus, and sea lions.
10 - mustelids ( some I'm sure are smarter than others.

For me:
1.) Bears, wild felines (big and small), and homonids.
2.) Great apes and cetaceans.
3.) Other primates.
4.) Elephants and mammoths.
5.) Mustelids and hyaenids.
6.) Seals, walruses, and other water mammals (beside cetaceans).
7.) Snakes.
8.) Wolves and other wild canids.
9.) Crocodylians.
10.) Domestic dogs and cats.

3. Other species of monkey
4. Crow, raven, Pigeons and grey parrot
5. Elephant
6. Ants, rats and similar small creatures
7. Big cats and small cats
8. Bear, hyena, wild dogs, wolf
9. Dogs
10. Pigs

4. Bears (brown and black, probably polar as well but they seem to be too unpredictable for a trainers liking.)

Although polar bears aren't overtly aggressive as grizzlies (but are still unpredictable), this does not detract from their intelligence. Bears have one of the highest brain-body size ratios on the planet, and surprisingly, polar bears rule over all other bears in this aspect.
When I made my list, I was mainly referring to intelligence from learnt self-experience, emotional, physical-mental intelligence, and logical intelligence, instead of trainers' tricks or learned behaviors from humans.

I judge their intelligence according to their ability to figure out and solve new problems and adjust to new situations. Example, a mother grizzly was walking in a shallow creek bed with her cub and decided to leave by climbing up the bank. But, the bank was too high, too steep, and too slick for the cub to climb out. So, the mother bear scratched rows of "ridges" up one side; thus forming a sort of ladder for her cub.
The polar bear had to learn brand new skills to survive in what I consider the world's harshest environment. They had no instincts to help guide them as to when to go out to sea in the ice flows or how to hunt seals who are underneath the ice. Polar bears are incredible predators.

In my opinion:
1) Rats (Einstein said if the rats weighed 20 kilos more, they would be the masters of the animals)...
2) Dolphins, orcas
3) Elephants
4) Bonobos and great apes
5) Bears
6) Crows and parrots as concerns the birds
7) octopus
8) Wolwes and wild dogs (Aftican wild dog, coyotes, dholes)
9) leopards
10) ants as concerns the collective intelligence.

Regardless of my list or rankings, the main point I wanted to make was: intelligence is a near-impossible thing to assess, much like physical strength between two-equally sized yet differently-built creatures.
The "dumber" animal might be more intelligent in something in which the apparently "smarter" animal doesn't possess.
Differing types and levels of intelligence is the key.

Every one claims their favorite animal is most intelligent.Anyway,from this site Bears are not in top 25 list , Cats are in 10.

One thing we noticed in the list is ALL TOP 20 animals are TRAINABLE or someway obey few commands. If that is the case only one Bear TILL now trained and nurtured by Humans.That is none other than Most aggressive,high canine teeth in the bear family aka 'Dancing Bear' or Honey Bear or Sloth Bear.

Top 20 Animals in the list are COMMON,rankings may differ. Bears are never be in any site/survey even-though most of the surveys are done by themselves (western media).

No Vinay; My list and I doubt any of the other lists I see here are made according to "favorite animal". I placed the bear exactly where I believe he deserves to be. The other posters here placed their favorite exactly where they believe their favorite should be placed. It appears that you are the only exception here and you simply quoted from some ( reputable ) online site. Now with that being said; stop your attempts at creating drama. Simply post according to topic and cease the personal attacks.

All animals have different set of ability & intelligence, it will be difficult to come to a conclusion like which specie is smarter.
Primates are closest to humans & do a lot of stuff that humans do, they are known to use tools.
Rats & birds especially crows are known to solve puzzles. Lyre birds can mimic any sound.
Pride & pack animals hunt in coordination. Tigers & crocs use ambush techniques.
Some animals have better memory than others.

Let two well known animals: the (domestic) dog, the (domestic) cat. The former reacts only to the power relations, the latter completely ignores them. But mostly people would pretend that the dogs are very smart animals. Because of its attitude, the dog's intelligence is very quantifiable whereas the cat's one is not at all.
But most of people pretending dogs are very intelligent animal never wanted to be a dog if they would have the choice to be the animal they desire... Npbility of spirit ?
Intelligence is one thing, mental ability is one other thing. Before apprehending one animal's intelligence we have to put it in the best conditions to react. Easy thing as concerns a dog which wants only one thing: to please its master. As concerns the wild animals, often the only one meticulous observation in his natural biotop can allow that. This last criterion is the most decisive, I think. This is for this reason that, for example, I would put the wolf' s intelligence above the dog's one... But I would be never categorical about that.
Animals will always amaze us.
