If the cat was poached I surely hope that the murderer will get what he deserves
I wonder if they will ever weigh the tiger since It seems a big one and it would be the first Kaziranga tiger to ever be weighed

The carcass is almost totally degraded, weighing wouldn't help with anything.
Oh, btw I saw some people saying that he was killed in a territorial fight. Idk for sure...

Hi! On the average adult males weigh about 230-240 kg and adult females 130-140kg. The largest tiger I have darted was about 285 kg. I don’t have the body measurements in my mind and we are currently under a lockdown due to Covid second wave. Can send you later. Regards

Edit - My question regarding average weight was particularly for tigers of Kanha (he has darted >10 tigers there), but I am not sure if the figure is for general bengal tiger population or just Kanha tigers

I tihink that include next tigers.
Konda and Banda have been captured and put on radio collar febury and october in 2007,their weights are both over 225kg,but we don't know their weights exactly because the scale up to 225kg.

The tiger kankatta who beat Munna weight only 197kg because bad physical condition.
Bheema was weght over 225kg in 2.5 years old.
And tiger patte wala has been put on a radio collar, and he killed by Munna in 2011,but we don't know his weight.
The tiger K1 has been put on a radio collar too,and he didn't separate with K2 when they are both subadult male in 2007(the left tiger was K1,the right tiger was K2).So K2 might weght by scientists when k1 put on radio,too.K2 beat K1 in 2008 and K1 killed by other adult tiger or death in poach .
I don't know the other male tigers have been put on collar, but Jhala's figures should content those male tigers.

Yes, I saw those figures some time ago. Makes of total 7 tiger weights that we know from Kanha

1. MV-2 son of Umarpani - 195 kg
2. Kankatta Old male - 197 kg
3. Bhima 2.5 yo subadult - 225 kg
4. Banda - 225 kg+ (exceeded the scale)
5. Konda - 225 kg+ (exceeded the scale)
6. Poochkata - 230 kg+ (broke the machine, exceeded the scale)
7. Unknown male - 285 kg

Average - 226 kg (likely higher as some tigers exceeded the scale)

There are many unknown figures too, I hope to recontact Dr. Jhala and ask about them. Maybe he can share. 230-240 kg average really interests me, would be even better if there's a large sample with it.

When I discussed with Jhala, he mentioned a tiger weighing 280-290 kg to be the heaviest he had weighed, but that it was with full stomach. At that time he didn´t have time to check his notes to tell exact weight. I assume, that it has to be that 285 kg tiger, which you have got information. It´s very big even so, something like 250-260 kg for sure.

MV2 was younger than Bhima when he weighed 195kg.
He was only 2.4 if I remember correctly.

This is what he wrote, directly from his email:

Jhala also said, that full stomach can mean even 40 kg extra weight. I know, that there are some different kind of statements what comes to it, but it´s what he mentioned.

RE: Modern weights and measurements on wild tigers - LandSeaLion - 06-22-2021

That info about the 280-290kg tiger being weighed with a full stomach was first mentioned well over a year ago (I did a Google search for the quote above to find it):

https://wildfact.com/forum/topic-modern-weights-and-measurements-on-wild-tigers?pid=101881#pid101881

It would be far more surprising if he wasn’t gorged. Even a 250kg tiger is already a very big animal.

All of these were Shadow's oral descriptions, think he needs to give Jhala's emailscreenshots to prove that Jhala did say full stomach about the tiger, otherwise I dont't think his oral descriptions credible.

He doesn't need to prove anything. It's your choice to believe his words or not.

@Shadow I'll interject here a bit. When I mailed him, Dr.Jhala hinted at not making his emails public so that everyone gets the idea to mail him (especially now that he's running the whole WII). This is the reason some of the researchers wholly ignore such mail/messages even, as @peter was recently wondering why... So please do keep that in mind while replying to the above.

Shadow is a bear fun,and I saw him clashed with tiger funs on YouTuBe,I won't doubt if you or Pckts or Khan85 said the same thing, but I am not aiming at him,and I agree with you that we shouldn't bother WII scientists a lot,I believe Khan85 because he send Jhala's emali screenshot to me by private letter, and I believe Pckts for the same reason.by the way, hope you are doing well.

@Rishi I got his permission to tell, that those weights came from him and you know about those emails, since I showed proof to moderators back then. I have shared only part from it, what we discussed and it´s about those weights, most what we discussed I will keep to myself. That´s why I had blurred parts of his emails so, that not even you other moderators saw all. I know that he runs whole WII because he got that promotion when I was emailing him, he is a very busy man.

I have been always very careful with emails with different biologists and I put partials emails public only if I get specific permission for the person. I see that as only way to keep trust with different people, not just by biologists. I also explained to him this forum and I asked if ok to tell here what he told to me about tiger weights.

This is directly from Jhala to me: "You are welcome to quote me if you feel it will help clarify stands and spread awareness. I have not been able to dig out my old data to chek the tiger weights but hope to get to it shortly. "

And I have quoted only things, he has said, not putting anything there, what isn´t his words. And nothing what I see as more confidential in his emails. And that´s how I do with any biologist with whom I have opportunity to discuss :)

Oh then, definitely share the screenshots & the detached but his account-pic.. To be honest I'm really curious as well. The whole conversation please. Grin

I see.. Ok, your scepticism is understandable. But we do try & keep any fanboyism out of Wildfact atleast. I assure you m8, any person overdoing any of that stuff here don't last long (& definitely don't become Mod).

So you can rest easy. Cheers.
