Why Lion,Puma,Wolf and Dhole's have no SPOTS on their coat?? - Vinay - 11-12-2016

Spots or stripes or some designs (AWD/Clouded leopards) help these carnivorous animals to STALK(merge with surroundings) the prey without undetected.

Then,Why Lions,Puma,Wolf,Caracal,Jaguarundi and Dhole's etc have no SPOTS on their coat??

Are they don't stalk??

Are they scavengers??
Are they hunt only in night??
Are they only run-down the prey??

Spots and stripes developed so that ambush predators like cats can break up there silhouette in thick vegetation. Lions and pumas originally did not evolve in those environments so the need to have them did not arise. The spots on a lion could actually make it easier to see in savannah grassland. The same can be said for pumas, as the plain brown coat matches the environment.

Jaguars, leopards and tigers typically live almost entirely in forest environments with a few exceptions. The coat colouration is what was advantageous for the species that occupied the land at the time. Evolution is a contentious cycle of demographic success and genetic replacement, which ever animal does the best will eventually take over, hence the animals we have today.

So, Lions and Pumas have no necessity to STALK like Wolves and Dhole dogs. They simply run-down the prey or scavenge!!
