Hello community! Came across this idea (shown below) on insta, i was wondering if this is how the FDs name their tigers across all national parks?

@georgegram, no that is not how tigers are given numbers across National Parks. This is only specific to Panna. After tigers were exterminated, Panna’s rewilding programme came up with this plan.

Founding tigers were numbered T x (as they were not originally from Panna but were located there). T7 the massive male who is also the last one introduced is still around (has fathered P141’s multiple litters). Most other founding tigers have passed.

The tigers who were born in Panna after relocation were codenamed P abc (a is mother (T1,T2,T4,T5,T6 from founding tigresses or a mother who was born in Panna itself). b is the litter number and c was the cub number that was assigned.

For example P243 is T2’s son or her third cub which is from her fourth litter (she had 6 litters and 23 cubs if I remember). Same way, P 213-21 is Kanhaiya. He is P213’s 1st cub from her 2nd litter.

Other Parks like Ranthambore assign numbers based on chronology of tigers leaving their mothers and establishing themselves. It’s a decent system to get ages of tigers correctly most of the time. Like in Kanha, Neela Nala is T121 whereas Junior Bajrang is T118 which means most likely Junior Bajrang is older but not by much.

7A, Bandhavgarh. Last litter of Spotty and Chakradhara Male. About to turn 3.

RE: Tiger Directory - Ashutosh - 05-31-2023

It’s the Kanha beast who beat Neela Nala male and Junior Bajrang last season. The highly elusive Boindabra Male aka T111, Kanha:

RE: Tiger Directory - Ashutosh - 06-13-2023

One of the rare clicks of P241 of Panna. His brother from the same litter P243 is well known to this forum, but P241 is shy and elusive plus most of his territory falls in the non-tourism zone.

Seen here P241 is himself injured near his mouth but has still killed an ox. 2 years ago, P243 himself sustained a massive gash on his forehead. That was the handiwork of P241. Rivalling in size to his brother (some even say he is bigger), this is a rare sight:

New entrant in Tadoba, 5225 male (because of his forehead markings):

RE: Tiger Directory - Ashutosh - 06-16-2023

The big boys of Churna range of Satpura. We have the old bruiser R2, his 3 male cubs - Rudra, Pratap and Shiva all nearly 3 years old. Then, there is Tarzan (the biggest of them all).
