Bear Enthusiasts, a Rare Breed - brotherbear - 03-24-2016
Lion and Tiger enthusiasts are common. The big cats are among the world's most popular animals along with dogs, house cats, horses, eagles, and wolves; As can be seen on calendars, wall art, etc. Here we have ( to date ) just two bear enthusiasts. Myself the grizzly and Polar the polar bear. Try as I might, I have found no other willing to partiscipate. Bear enthusiasts are a rare breed.

Agreed, I'm by no means as knowledgeable as you guys when it comes to Bears but I certainly enjoy them, they're the most powerful carnivore/omnivore on land and one of the most intimidating animals, period.

Because the bear is already at the top of the food chain, dominate over the big cats.
Lion and tiger are basically two peers to fight for the dominance as the largest cat, that's why so many controversial discussions were generated for them.

I have a tonne of discussion about the prehistoric bears, but no one is willing to follow me as well.

I am very interested in the prehistoric bears. I am lacking in the educated knowledge of most of you here but very interested. Tigerluver has done some comparison pictures that I really like and I'm hoping to see more. I'd love to learn more about the older bear species like Agriotherium and the more recent Atlas bear.

I am exploring the origin of the Brown bear family that includes the extinct Cave bear species.

I think it's related to the kind of oportunity one has of learning about them. For example, I've learned a lot about lions and leopards by reading blogs written by the people who work with them, and these are pieces that sometimes show a more accurate side of their life than, say, a documentary.
In comparison, most of what I know about bears, that isn't much I have to say, comes from a few documentaries, and a little bit learned here, and that's it. So I think sometimes little knowledge means one gets less close to that animal.
Consider the case of tje jaguar, the biggest cat here in Argentina. It's a beautiful, majestic animal, more muscular, bigger and stronger than the leopard. And yet, I like leopards much more because I know so much more about leopards than I do about jaguars.
On a final note, I'm not someone that likes to talk about something I don't know, so I refrain myself of doing so, except for making questions.

From where I am , thank to you, I learn a lot about bears, how fascinating they are... Indeed the big cats are more popular, but you're showing, demonstrating, that bears have as much interest as lions or tigers.
Thank to you too, I realize how much different they could be during the prehistoric times/periods. An arctodus is as different from a extant bear as a smilodon from an extant big cat. And I am impatient to learn more a lot about them and species like ursus tyrannus you had mentionnned .

But @brotherbear, don't worry. I do like bears, my favourite is the Grizzly bear, the Black bear in second place. I may be more quiet about it, but I really enjoy bears. They present such a contrast than the cat, that is more about balance. The bear is all about power and raw strenght. Big, thick, and huge. Amazing animals.
I am back, guys! Plus, I do agree with everything you said Majingilane.
My parents and I were in a huge financial trouble regarding my dad's company known as Micron. Basically, what happened was that Micron brought a corrupt share from an unidentified Chinese technological company specializing in computer chips, and the end result: all members and employees of Micron were charged 300,000 each for buying an unincorporated stock (my dad's boss actually bought the illegal stock but he wasn't charged, and I do not know why they didn't charge him for the crime.)
This turn of events, of course, riddled both my dad's banking accounts. He couldn't keep up with our house's mortgages and with this we went bankrupt. The computer, house, and phones (basically any assets we owned) were taken by the foreclosure agency. (which is one reason why I haven't been able to reply.) I also had to pay to use the internet service at my local library, and that service is quite expensive.
Luckily now, my Dad retrieved a lawyer and filed charges against his boss and Micron for allowing the unincorporated stock to charge his bank accounts, and the court case is still in the process.
Both my parents bought a house (albeit much smaller, but still roomy), and now I have the technology capable to communicate with you guys without paying for any sort of service.
It's been a long journey this one and a half past month, and I hope my Dad gets his 300,000 back from winning the case.

You are right, Big cats are bigger star compared to bears but this is due to lot of reason like, they are most filmed animals in documentaries aired on discovery, animal planet, nat geo, bbc etc.. This is because they are easy to film and study and since they are pure carnivore with full of action they get more attention. African country have large plain and they organize easy and convenient tour for its visitor, this make people go to see these animals and hence many of them get attracted towards them.
Unfortunately bear has different life style. They live in place which is not very ideal for most of tourist.
I love polar bear a lot and if you can see I tried to contribute maximum in polar bear thread despite of my very limited knowledge.
The community of scientist and researcher are not very friendly when it comes to share the knowledge in open forum like wildfact. They do share it but most of them in paper or in any specific publication.
Now if we talk about members on wildfact then I still consider wildfact is not very big and popular community on internet. First when we started we have lot of members who love tigers and they put lot of information about them, for sometime it looks like wildfact is community of tigers fans only, but with time when @Majingilane , @Pantherine and other people joined wildfact, it become big place for Lion information and now its look like Lion section has become more popular than tiger section. So basically it depends on people who join us and how willing they are sharing information with us. Currently we lack bear specialist but You have already given a very good start to wildfact when it comes to bear knowledge. I hope with time we will make it full of information and discussion for bears just like big cats.

Really you and your family passing through very bad situation, we wish you all the best in getting back those lost assets. Keep faith and do the right things, I am sure you family will overcome with it.

You make a lot of good sense Sanjay. As much as I admire grizzlies, even I get tired of watching them catch salmon. I'd love to see a documentary on the Russian grizzly bears of the taiga. Thank you for the kind words.

And I enjoy watching polar bear, brown bear, and black bear documentaries. I wish there was more info and videos on sun bears though. And its true that we bear lovers are fewer in number compared to cat and probably canine lovers.
