1 - SHARKS

This shark, an adult male, featured in a recent documentary on white sharks which was broadcasted on the National Geographic Channel (could have been Discovery). The sharks were caught with a line in a small boat (dinghy), exhausted (by using buoys), 'guided' towards a research ship and, with an elevator, lifted out of the water. Before they were released, a transmitter was put in the dorsal fin (see photograph). The transmitter transferred a signal every time the dorsal fin broke the surface. In this way, they were able to follow the shark for a considerable amount of time.

I read an article recently. Most white sharks west of California move between California and Hawai, so it seems. It could be they meet there to mate, but they were not sure.

This is the shark on the elevator just before he was released. At 17 feet and 9 inches, he was the longest they measured:

Great Images Pckts. TFs. Orcas are top predator among marine animals, do doubts. Their social structure is also very complicated but advance compare to other social animals

I had no idea that Great Whites preyed on Elephant Seals until I watched shark week this week.
Quite impressive creatures, to say the least.

WHITE SHARKS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

The longest white shark actually measured was just over 19 feet. There are many rumours about larger sharks, but these have not been substantiated. In spite of that, some marine biologists in Australian now accept white sharks can get over 20 feet in total length. The question is how much larger.

Some of the white sharks caught, measured and photographed near Italy and Malta in particular, according to the writers of this report, reached at least 22 feet.

Some years ago, I saw a video on the tube. It was taken from a helicopter near the Spanish coast during a ship race. The video is now gone, but the shark on the video probably isn't. It was swimming close to the surface when the catamaran passed and it was way longer than 20 feet.

When I was in Australia visiting relatives some years ago, we stayed a day in Eden on the east coast. A century ago, Eden had professional fishermen. They caught wales and apparently cooperated with orca's. A local historian and journalist wrote a book and I bought it in the museum that has the skeleton of the male orca who cooperated with the whalers. Tom, he was called.

When there were no whales, people swam in the bay. Not a good idea. One day, a big white shark swimming very close to shore was caught. Just under 19 feet she was, but the girth was immense. I'll post the photograph in some time.
