It was just a matter of time until this clash...we are waiting updates.

Last night we found 3 massive male lions hunting a huge herd of buffalo, however they were unsuccessful in their attempts.

For the love of God, no.

It's natural. Felines have some of the worst  successful hunting % in nature. They don't catch their prey more often than what they do, it's normal.

The only reason it's being highlighted is because some very old or very young lions suffered it, but it is not going to impair young, prime lions.

one unsuccessful hunt doesnt mean they are failing .... they need a few lionesses to drive the buffalo apart causing some confusion ... then they can pick off a weaker one

A Birmingham male lion looks up as he hears the sound of other lions close-by. This pair of lions had been mating and the male was acting particularly defensive over the Ntsevu lioness, not allowing any other lions to come close to her.

A male lion looks fiercely towards one of his brothers as he stands guard next to the lioness that he was mating with. I enjoy how the tail of the lioness and the darkness both contribute towards a natural frame around the male’s piercing eyes.

Male lions can cover huge distances in a night as they patrol their territory. One has to take this into account when setting out to search for them in the morning, as tracks that seem fresh could be a few hours old and one could still be several kilometres behind them. Luckily, on this particular morning we were sitting watching some antelope when we heard lions calling as part of their territorial patrol. With some coordinated teamwork, the lions were found soon after. Seeing male lions on the move is quite humbling as their power and strength is well portrayed through their heavy footfalls.

I am interested to know if the weight of these males has been guestimated before(say during better times, not in this thinner state during this current climate) they look like some very big boys.

There's nothing to stop them from taking over all former Majingilane territory.

However, it remains to be seen how much they are willing to spread because that also carries the danger of having a big part of their land unprotected.

When the Majingilane expanded, they had been in charge of Londolozi and MalaMala for several years, and when they pulled their second takeover, they shifted their focus to the west and decided to prioritize it, slowly leaving behind their eastern land, first with MalaMala and then even most of Londolozi.

The Birmingham males, on the other hand, are having this chance with them barely having started their patrols on Londolozi and with a very recent romance with the Mangheni pride. So I'm not sure what they're going to do, because wanting to take it all would easily mean they would have to be so spread out that any incoming invasion of a rival coalition/s would find them either alone or only as a two man force.

Very interesting times ahead, and also a chance for new blood to come in.

The Birmingham Males are becoming more and more established as the dominant male lions of the area as we have enjoyed regular sightings of them this week. Two of them have been seen mating with some of the Ntsevu lionesses a few times. We are hoping that they can establish themselves enough to provide a stable environment for the Ntsevu lionesses to raise some cubs in.
