RE: Bear Canine Teeth and Claws - parvez - 01-05-2017

It's surprising that even polar bears canines have massive root. I expected otherwise.

From GrizzlyClaws... Brown Bears ( Info, Pics and Videos ) post #44:

True, especially with the brown bear as the polar bear's fangs are big cat-ized which evolved to become longer and sharper, a perfect attribute as a pure predatory animal.

The brown bear fangs are really suitable for brawling and struggling.

The Brown bears are extremely efficient fast biters, whereas the big cats are killing biters.

The Brown bears can constantly bite fast, unlikely the big cats' killing bite method, they have developed another technique to strip their preys alive.

Look how gruesome and ogre-ish from that killing technique, the poor moose has almost been skinned alive. It is by far more painful to be eating alive by a Brown bear than the instant killing from a big cat.

I do think the killing of larger prey is far more brutal though, watching lions eat buffalo alive and a tiger lick and drink the blood of the prey it's immobilized is pretty gruesome as well.
Both can be brutal killers when they have to.

@Pckts

I got this observation as well, the bloodthirsty behavior can also be observed from an instant killer like the big cats.

All predators could have been involved with some sort of sadism, since many predators were known to torture their preys with pleasure.

Post #26 shows me a killing technique by brown bears that I was unaware of; horrific while interesting.

My guess is right. Animals in northern hemisphere originated during Pleistocene and earlier have massive roots almost twice to the tip of canines.

Both Amur and Bengal have massive canine root, whereas the lion as a pride animal, their canine root wasn't fully developed like that of the tiger.
