RE: Leopards of Sabi Sands - Ngala - 11-26-2016

From Leopard Hills Private Game Reserve:
We had the most amazing sighting of the Dayone male and Basile mating yesterday.
When leopard's meet up to mate, it will usually last over a period of between three and five days and starts off with mating happening as frequent as every fifteen minutes and towards the end every thirty minutes or longer. After mating the leopards will separate.
After a short three month gestation the female will give birth to between one and three cubs which she will raise on her own , with the male only providing security for the cubs by protecting his territory.

From Umkumbe Safari Lodge, Week in Pictures : 100% Perfect Images for Black Friday:
"Umkumbe Safari Lodge, our haven in the Sabi Sand never fails us in terms of predator sightings. The highlight of the week, apart from the abundance of our bovids and pachyderms, is the appearance of Kaxane. A while ago we introduced you to Kaxane, a powerful male leopard and evident newcomer to Umkumbe. About a month back there was a fight between Kaxane and Mxabene, leaving Max riddled with scars and battle wounds. Let’s see what Kaxane has in store for us this week!"

The gorgeous Flat Rock Male stares intently over the Sand River. This male is new to the area and sadly it appears as though he may have killed the latest litter of the Mashaba female leopard. Although far smaller than the Piva male who has also been pushing into the territory, the Flat Rock male seems to be holding his own.

Golden morning light illuminates the deep orange eyes of the Flat Rock Male. His eye colour bears a striking resemblance to that of the now-deceased Gowrie male, but as far as we know they are not related. Having said this, in an open eco-system like the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, gene flow through different areas is entirely possible through individuals of which we don’t know, so maybe there is some link between the two individuals.
