PJD Photography and Guiding:
One of the Selati males looking not very happy with us. After a while just staring at the vehicle he lost interest and did what lions do best, SLEEP.

what happened to the rest of the selati coalition?

RE: the Selati coalition - LionKiss - 01-31-2016

They were initially five strong. They made a wrong move, tried to takeover Majingilane territory. They found them and killed one of them.

Then in 2014 I think one of the Selatis, I think it was the one identified as #3, was gored by a buffalo. He struggled for some time, but never quite recovered from his wounds and eventually died. I don't know if he died naturally or if he was again injured by buffalos and that was the cause of his dead.

When the Majingilane noticed this weakness in the Selati males, they started to make a move into their territory. They attacked them several times, and each time they injured a different male. Eventually, they made the definitive move and Selati #2 was killed in the fight and the other two remaining Selatis became nomads until now.

no they are not nomads yet, they control the Talamati Pride, they have cubs and I hope they protect them until they get adult

RE: the Selati coalition - Tshokwane - 01-31-2016

I know. What I meantt is that they were nomads until now that they have taken over this pride.

RE: the Selati coalition - LionKiss - 01-31-2016

right, they lost the Othawa to Majs and Xihmwunge lionesses are all dead, only their sub adults have left.

what coaltition they took Talamati over from?

I think the Talamati's were a pride controlled by the Northern Matimbas, but this males are in their old age now and started to shrink a bit their territory. So, I don't think there was a clash between them, merely they must have found this territory empty, without dominant males, and established themselves.

RE: the Selati coalition - LionKiss - 02-01-2016

and what happened to the Northern Matimba cubs? Did they have any by the time of the take over by the Selatis?
or all have left the Talamati pride earlier?

I'm not sure if the females had cubs, but I do know the young males left the pride, I think there are three of them.

Talamati pride and Selati males
"We also only had one sighting of our southern pride this week, but what a sighting it was! Alistair found them on the Sabi Sands boundary, and soon all hell broke loose, when a Buffalo herd approached the sighting. Alistair described it as a text book Buffalo hunt! I think he’s in love! They managed to bring down a sub-adult Buffalo, and the whole pride and both big males were present. They must have eaten well during the past week, because the males were very relaxed, and didn’t run in and take it all."

there some info recently that one of the Selatis has an injured leg and a limp, I don't know how serious it is
and that there is some kind of interaction, possible some chasing or small fights, with the Birmingham Boys, do you have any info?

I haven't heard anything more about them, but I don't think that they've had contact with the Birmingham males.

In any case, the possible threat would be the two Thanda Impi males. But about the injury, I wouldn't worry that much.
