RE: the Selati coalition - Potato - 10-11-2020

The arrival of the Salati male lions in the Western sector of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve spelt the end for the three remaining Mapogo males. This was the biggest of the Selati males, and was taken the very first time they moved into the west from their natal Pride, the Southern Pride from the South of the Reserve. We had heard the stories and were waiting for them, listening to the reports from various lodges to the East as they moved slowly west over a period of a few weeks. Not long after this photo was taken, the infamous battle between the coalitions happened that saw Mr. T mauled and killed, and the last surviving 2 Mapogo become nomadic and move into the Kruger where they eventually would died of old age. As a coalition the Selati males never lived up to their promise, eventually ending with two of them established in the #manyeletigamereserve for a few years, there place being taken in the sands by the arrival of the #machingalane males. #wildlife photographic #safaris would have been amazing had they managed to hang onto their territory a little while longer. @sigmaphoto_sa #sigmaphoto_sa

Recently discovered, The selati coalition story. Very interesting although the music is needlessly agressive, IMO.

They were very unlucky. At least they left legacy in the Talamati pride and in the last Ximhungwe lioness

Yes... If I understand well they held out despite the Mapogo, the Majingilane and so on. The competition and struggle were intense.

I couldn't be more agreed. The lion competition on a few years back was very tough for the young lions and nomadic... Now seems to be heating up once again.

For Selatis only problem where Majingilanes and death from Selati #2 from buffalo give the edge to Majingilanes, they killed 2 Selatis in total over the years and tookover their territory in the end.

Exactly, The death of the #2 had a big impact for the Selati males. As well, They not were males with confidence... At least, They always had a lack of confidence in themselves.

RE: the Selati coalition - Matimbalani - 12-24-2020

From reading various posts it seems that their problem was also that they were spread out between different prides. This made it easier for the Majings to isolate and kill them off. Just goes to show how unique and ultimately successful the Majings were in their approach.
