Please this is only a assumption. (Facebook).

Sons of Mapogos, Othawa Males update

One of the possible sons of the Mapogos was sighted in Kruger, September 14, 2017. His features are identical to Othawa M, his similarities are nearly 100% the same. His age is also consistent with the age of the Othawa Males. More info hopefully coming soon on this sighting.

How can the researchers,or the fieldguides, or someone else really interested about the Mapogo phenomena doesnt put them any radio collar, at that moment?before exit the Sabi...another thing that trullly convince me that the Mapogos and there sons, were never been appreciate by the locals. They didnt want that the saga to be continued!

Two things.

-1 There needs to be a point to it, a practical reason, a scientific research, something of that kind of thing.

And that's the second thing.
2- They understand the ecosystem, they don't treat lions as pets, as different or more important as any of the other animals. People keep making them look and paint them as this deities, when in fact they were only animals.
Fanatism isn't appreciation for the natural world, Infamous. It just blinds and misleads you.

The lodge has been so busy over the last few months that I literally have not had a chance to blog! The sightings have however remained amazing as always and here is a brief summary of the predator viewing since Feb.

Probably the headline news is the four young Southern Pride males (now known as the Selati Males) taking over from the three old Mapogo’s. The Selati brothers had been exploring Mapogo territory for a few months but had always retreated at the sign of a confrontation. One night in March however the Selati Males came across the Mapogo’s on a buffalo kill in front of the lodge and split the older males up. Sataan was separated and the Selati males chased him for many kilometres before catching him and viciously attacking him (video). Sataan eventually died of his wounds and the two remaining Mapogo’s, Makhulu and Skoro, have been roaming nomadically to our east ever since.

The Mapogo Male Lion coalition are the inspiration for the second of our brand new, luxury Bush Houses at Cheetah Plains!
These male lions held a massive territory & reigned supreme across the Sabi Sand for many years! They are Legends of the Sabi Sand!

Tough looking Mapogo this morning!

All 3 males joined up again last night and were still roaring this morning...that is until a Ximungwe lioness arrived and shook up things a little, only to be pursued by this male.

Hello to all. I apologize if the topic was not correct. I'm a new Italian writing. first of all, congratulations for this site of which I ignored the existence and that I recently discovered. I am passionate about lions and my passion has increased after seeing the doc on the mapogos brothers. I would have to ask some questions ... if I'm not mistaken these lions to date are all dead. but apart from tinky tail that was killed by the 4 majinj others as they died? have they left adults today? the 4 majinj went to command instead of the mopogos? are they still alive or have they even found death against new coalitions of young males? what are today the males that dominate the territory and where on the site can I find information about them? I apologize for the many questions. and I renew the congratulations for this wonderful site. sandro

Ciao Sandro, welcome to the forum.

After Kinky tail died, the second Mapogo to die was Rasta, he and another of his brothers got into a fight with the Majingilane in July 2010, and Rasta didn't come back. At the end of that year, Dreadlocks also dissapear( he used to hunt cattle and it seems a farmer set a trap on him and killed him and other animals, or hired someone to do it).

In 2012, Mr.T was killed by the Selati males and the 2 remaining Mapogos were exiled and lived as nomads until they died from old age.

Yes, they did become dominant. But last month 2 of the Majingilane died, another died last year and the last one hasn't been seen for some time. They weren't chased off by any other coalitions, simply died of old age.

The Birmingham males, and there's a couple of other younger males establishing themselves.
You can check the Lion section, where there's a thread for individual dominant coalitions, and also another called Lions of the Sabi sands, were we post about the younger males and also prides of lionesses.

Mak certainly had the most unique roar.  Could hear that thing for miles.  DM also has quite a unique one, and ginger matimba.

These two males were from the the infamous 'Mapogo Coalition', a group of male lions who demanded respect from all species that crossed their path!

RE: The mighty Mapogos - IñigoMontoya - 05-24-2018

One question:

The Mapogos controlled 9 prides in all Sabi Sands. They sired few males that survived and many people say they was the worst in raise cubs but..... How many females still alive todays. Is the bloodline Mapogo over?
