Article by James Kydd

Night has fallen, and five of the Sparta males, the infamous Mapogo coalition, are sleeping on the grassy plains of Winnis’ Clearing. They lie flat and motionless, our spotlight only just illuminates the outline of their heaving ribcages.I park a respectful distance from them, turn off the engine, and although we can not see their faces, we soak in an atmosphere only they could command: five adult male lions. And us. Together. In the dark.
A gentle westterly breeze sent from the river tickles the back of my head and snakes its way through the grass blades towards the brothers, hardly disturbing the tops of their manes.
One awakens and lifts his head. Like the rest of his coalition he is a breeding male in peak physical condition. His thickened mane, his war suit, has just come into its prime. His shoulders and forelegs, enormous vertebrae snappers, stretch out in front of him. His large golden eyes pierce the darkness and then he cranes his neck back and lifts his huge nose: his finder of food, females, friends and foes. And as the breeze ruffles his mane once more, he finds something he did not expect on the air.
The next second is an image that remains with me forever. Something in his eyes changes, and without any spoken communication all five males rise together like Samurai warriors with swords drawn, suddenly aware of an assassin in their midst. They are staring at us. Through us. The filtered red light casts an eerie glow over their huge frames as they wade quietly through the grass. There is almost a look of disbelief on their faces: how has another lion managed to sneak up on them, and which lion would dare to do such a thing? A look of disbelief and a look of focus: it may be killing time again. The five lion-eaters walk slowly but with intent straight for our vehicle. And then I smell it too: the distinctive smell of lion dung. It’s on my tyres. I must have driven over it earlier in the day….
I whisper to my guests to remain still and silent as the coalition surrounds our Landie from all sides and gives it a thorough inspection. They slide their noses over the panels for what seems like ages, and take particular interest in my front tyre. I have a great view of one of the male’s eyes a meter from my foot: there is no door on the driver’s side. They raise their heads and examine us inside the vehicle, and as I promise my guests they will not jump inside I marvel at the fact that they don’t. After a few ancient minutes they return to their resting spot and leave us to drive home, feeling wonderfully alive.

@Georgel is pasting some articles actually self written by a well known fraud of Facebook Jairo Reyes. please dont start all that here in wild fact. all the real mapogo experts refutes him. jairo changed actual mala mala articles by his own words. i have a example of it.

@Georgel is also a part a jairo group. so beware of fake articles about mapogos.

I'm still waiting for you to point out which one of my article was/is fake.

I'm part of many facebook groups dedicated to lions, including https://www.facebook.com/groups/251700078557859/ where our dear moderator Ezequiel Almada, aka Majingilane, is an active member. What has this to do with what I am posting here?

@Georgel  the post about fuller maned dominant kt you did. In my opinion it was self written by jairo . I am following mapogo fan pages, groups.etc For years. I have direct contact with many of rangers. And I never seen this before 2016 . I know jairo's fakeness.

Regardless of if it's fake or not, we're going to have to move forward on this, otherwise we're going to get stuck for pages about this.

We have found some basic understandment on this subject, so I don't see the point of keeping with it.

Whenever you find new info, then of course share it, but for now let's move on.

When we saw him in December 2011, little did we know about the Mapogo Coalition. The Sabi Sands rangers however might be able to put a name on him. The most famous, infamous coalition in our day and age.

A band of brothers, 5+1 were the ultimate lions to roam the Sabi Sands and far beyond.

In the picture he's looking at one of his brothers, having a lion sort of 'romantic interlude' with one of the lionesses. To us as human spectators, and we could be very wrong, it was as he wanted to be with her as well.

24 hours later it was the other way 'round. He managed to be with the same lioness while his brother was watching him, from the same distance.

The three members of the Mapogo coalition, have had a difficult time this month, they have had at least two fights excluding the interaction they had with the Ottawa young males, where the young males were badly wounder and one almost had his spine broken.

Note how alert they become every time the bush moves and look at all the scares on them. A week later after the first fight one of the males, Mr T went to get his face ‘redone’ in another fight (see claw marks on his face).

Lion sightings have been great, on one morning we followed up on the noises of lions and buffalo interactions we heard the night before. It was only after a few minutes of followings tracks that we found two male lions (Mapogo) and a lioness from Ximhungwe pride on a buffalo kill. Mapogos are, as always, having some domestic disputes. A quiet afternoon nap at the buffalo carcass erupted into a full on brawl war. The Mapogo are showing signs of a recent battle with a neighbouring coalition. They have deep scratches and bite marks.
