Sometimes, black and white pics take something away from the image. It isn't the case with lion faces, though.
In fact, their scars are even enhanced by the B & W effect.
Like with Sikio and Hunter's brother, Scar, for example.

New information...
Its not all well in Lion Land! Or is it?
Recently, Three Large male Lions, all the way from Rekero Camp (35km from Naboisho), staged a pride take-over inside Naboisho Conservancy. They are already mating with the newly won lionesses.

Earless and his friend Boxer Nose, credits to Reinhard Radke Nature Photography.
"End of May I met one of the lion males, which played a role in my epic two-part film „Pride”, shot between September 2013 and March 2014. Then a young lad, following his mother, one of the Ronkai lionesses, pestering the females for food. Today he’s a strong tough male, ready for what life will bring. Astonishingly enough, he still roams the areas next to the Ronkai territory!"

Earless and Boxernose
After our little photo session the same night the hungry lions found their bonanza: A hippo had died and had been pulled out of the Talek River to avoid water polution.

Any carnivore’s dream: A dead hippo provides a meal the size of nearly a ton! No surprise there are different opinions of how and who to eat it…

Earless and Boxernose found the carcass after we left them in late evening: It was 8-9 kilometers away “as the crow flies”, but they made it. And had more steaks than any lion can cope with. Just some hyenas had to be looked for.

Boxernose already had more than just a lion’s share and recovered unbelievingly fast. Last evening he hardly could walk, today he takes on hyenas.

Nevertheless, he isn’t anymore, what he was years ago. The hyena is frightened, but realizes that he is satisfied with big gestures and growls

Under normal conditions such short distance to a lion would be lethal for any hyena.

Boxernose has had enough. After tiring squabbles in the heat, he looks for some shade.

Not so Earless: When he realizes that the steaks are at stake, he moves in from the shade. And the hyenas make the mistake, to judge him from their experience with Boxernose.

n a split second one scavenger, which was still feeding at the back of the carcass, finds itself in the jaws of a very angry lion.

Earless is still a young male: The hyena escapes with a very severe bite in its back, limping heavily. It might die later from the injuries, but an encounter like this with an experienced older lion would have killed it instantly.

Boxernose has seen it all. His hind legs are so slim, that one wonders, how he moves without falling over. Without Earless he would not survive on his own. However, here he is bleeding from wounds he most probably got from Earless, fighting over food.
