Two persian leopards observed in Parvar Protected Area, northern Iran, This is footage of their interaction recorded by one of the rangers of the PA. Persian leopards are believed to show mating behavior during the winter season. They are extremely rare to view and one of the nearly extinct species of leopard.

Iran is without a doubt the Persian Leopards stronghold. With an estimated population of 550-850 individuals (out of potentially 871-1290 Persian Leopards), But this is just an estimated amount based on sightings from rangers, hunters and the people who live in Leopard territory. They live spread across 50 % of Irans landmass, which accounts to 885 300 km2. The absolute best place for leopards in Iran is Golestan National Park, which alone has 30-45 leopards. Leopards have little to fear, except from humans, who unfortunatly poach, and kill Leopards to protect their livestock.
The biggest individual ever found was found in Golestan, and weighed 86 kgs.

This shepard was attack by a Persian Leopard when he was collecting wood in the evening, and was lucky to escape alive. He had some bad injuries, but he`ll see them through.... I do not want to mess with a Leopard!!

Recent footages of three leopards in Birk PA, brings back hope for the future of Persian leopards in southeastern Iran.Sistan & Baluchistan Provicne in SE Iran is one of the lest known areas for Persian leopards with seldom records from this area. Amazing new footage of a male leopard feeding of a cow it killed! This scene took place in Iran. And this really is a happy case, because the farmer who owned the cow didn`t poison it like many people do, but instead reported it to the forrest guards and scientists who works with the Leopards

What's equally as impressive to me is seeing the diverse Iranian landscapes. It's not the barren wasteland I often see on TV.

Thanks for directing that. Persian Leopards weighing over 90 kgs is extraordinary, what i would give to see such an individual ! Do you have any information on where that perticular individual was found ? [img]images/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

The only thing that we know now is that those leopards in Iran are among the largest, at the same side than those of South Africa and Sri Lanka.
India also have large leopards (if not the longest ones), although not as heavy as those of the previous areas mentioned here. There are second hand reports that leopards in the jungle areas of Africa (like Gabon) are also large, but at this moment just a few skulls are the only evidence that suggest a large size.

Here are a few comparative measurements of the largest skulls from certain regions, that I have been able to found:
Gabon: 285.8 mm x 181 mm - Rowland Ward (1914).
Kenya: 298.4 mm x 149.2 mm - Rowland Ward (1978) [I found it doubtful, as the wide is too small for such a large size].
Belgian Congo: 282 mm x 168 mm - Hollister (1918).
Iran: 288 mm x 181 mm - Kiabi et al. (2002).
India: 287 mm x 200.7 mm - Prater (1921).
There are other several records from many areas, but these are the only ones that surpassed the 280 mm limit, showing that these skulls belonged to exceptional specimens.
If someone have more records, please post them. Check that if we exclude the doubtful record from Kenya, the largest skull is, indeed, that of Iran.
