What a monster of a tiger in the first picture, the others (tigress's) were very big and hungry looking!

A Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) feeding on the carcass of an Indian rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis) in India.( Unsure if the tiger killed the rhino or not, if it was poached. However there have been accounts of tiger preying on rhinos, so the idea of it not being killed by the tiger cannot be ruled out)

From what I've been seeing, poaching of the indian rhino is very high in Kaziranga, my thoughts are that tigers have found them and feed on them, thus enjoying very good meals in return when the poaching dies down they hunt them after getting a good taste and a very long meal.

"Tigers have hunted down two elephants, including a young one, last month in Kerala forests. The killing of the young elephant at Sairandhri in the Silent Valley National Park has caught the wildlife experts by surprise as tigers are known to target mostly cubs. The nearly seven-year-old tusker was hunted down by the tiger near the trek path that runs through the forest area. The ill-fated elephant had charged at two forest officials inside the forest on the eve of its death. A few researchers and forest officials had reported hearing loud cries of the animal and roaring of the tiger early hours of March 27. The body of the animal was found on the trek path the next morning, said M. Joshil, Assistant Wildlife Warden of the park.Signs of battle between the two animals were visible at the site where the carcass was found. Pug marks of the tiger were also spotted at the site. The elephant had suffered big wounds on the hind limbs indicating that it was attacked from behind, he said.O.P. Kaler, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Biodiversity), felt that it was unusual for a juvenile elephant to be killed by tiger. Though incidents of elephants attacking cubs had been reported, killing of juvenile was uncommon. The reduced prey base in the evergreen forest might have forced the tiger to hunt the elephant. The animal might have been sick and weak, making it vulnerable to the attack, he said. The managers of the park also succeeded in photographing the tiger feeding on the remains of the body for nearly one week. It came for feeding after 6.20 p.m. for a week and every time, it dragged the carcass away before feeding on it. The remains were left at the site of the kill for the animal to feed, officials said.P.S. Easa, member of the Steering Committee of the Project Elephant Task Force, said that tigers were the only predators of calf elephants. Animals that get separated from the herd or inquisitive cubs venturing out from the care of adults can fall prey to tiger attacks. In another incident, a three-month-old calf was killed at Kappayam in Edamalayar range. The calf might have been isolated by the herd. There is also the possibility of wild dogs attacking the calf. The carcass was destroyed after post mortem, said B.N. Nagaraj, Divisional Forest Officer, Malayattoor.Last year, two elephants were killed by tigers in Kurichiyad range of Wayanad."

Here is the full story and the video of this incident.
This picture was taken by Sandesh Kadur, he videoed this incident and made a documentary about Kaziranga.

RARE GLIMPSE OF KAZIRANGA TIGERS

When it comes to adult male tigers, they usually avoid each other, an adult male tiger will not tolerate the presence of another adult male. But in areas where there is high tiger density, things can happen out of norm. There is only one recorded incident where three adult male tigers with a female tiger shared a carcass of a dead rhino, by tolerating each others presence. This is the first time such a behaviour is noticed and captured in the camera. Do have a look at the documentary in the link given below.

Rhinos new preys for Dudhwa tigers?

Have Dudhwa tigers shunned their preferred prey - the cheetals and sambhars - to hunt the mighty rhinos? The killing of a 35-year-old female rhino by a tiger in Dudhwa national park and the subsequent eating of the carcass has raised a doubt if the behaviour of Dudhwa tigers is changing. The experts are not ready to buy the argument that the declining prey base is the reason why tigers are hunting and eating rhinos.

"If tiger population in the park is increasing, prey base can not decline," said Tito Joseph from the wildlife protection society of India ( WPSI). The tiger sneaked into the rhino rehabilitation area to kill the 35-year-old female rhino Pavitri, brought to Dudhwa in 1984 under the rhino rehabilitation programme. This was the fifth attack since November last year on rhinos by tigers in Dudhwa. In the past one year, two rhinos have been killed by tigers and one has rescued by the park administration in Dudhwa. The feline attacks on rhinos aren't rare. But, in most of the incidents, it's the cubs which are killed.

Contrary to this, it was an adult female rhino killed this time. Is it the same tiger which is killing rhinos? Is the attacking feline old? Bibhav Taluqdar, who chairs International Union for Conservation of Nature Asian rhino specialist group, said Dudhwa authorities should try to find answers to such questions in case the attacks are rampant. "It's not rare that tigers kill and eat rhino. Rhino comes as an easy hunt for a tiger who can not chase a deer," he said.

Assam's Kaziranga National Park, which shelters the biggest population of rhinos, has about 15 to 20 rhino cubs getting killed in tiger attacks every year. The killing of an adult rhino is not common. "A tigress rearing its cubs can kill a rhino as the feline need not go far from its cubs," said Taluqdar. Though rhinos are mighty, a single adult tiger can kill a rhino. In Corbett there have been incidents where elephants have been killed by tigers. Compared to this rhino is an easier kill, he said.

Tigers eating rhino, experts feel, is not bewildering. "Rhino is not a preferred prey for tigers but once killed, tigers can eat it," said Joseph. Deputy director, Dudhwa Ganesh Bhatt said, "we have informed central government about the rhino mortalities". In Dudhwa, rhinos were re-introduced in 1984 under state's rhino rehabilitation programme. At present, 29 rhinos are present in the Kakraha range of the park. Existing in maximum numbers in Kaziranga national park, rhinos exist in Dudhwa tiger reserve in UP and Valimiki Reserve in Bihar.

Good Video, But still not a complete clear hunt scene. Its very very hard to film the complete tiger hunt, One of the main reason is their habitat, they live in dense habitat.

Same thing for jaguar, They have been filmed hunting near bank river because it is open. There are very few clips which show jaguar hunting inside forest.

Battle of Bandipur by Raghunath Belur

A gaur (Bos gaurus), would normally be too large and powerful for even wild dogs to take on, but here in the Bandipur National Park, a large pack of 18 dholes (Cuon alpinus), chose to target her young calf. The assault continued for 30 minutes, testimony to the alacrity and determination of the mother to protect her young one. But all was in vain. In the end the dogs had their day. This image captures a poignant moment when the mother's horn gored and flung her own calf overhead.

Rhino calf killed by tiger

A rhino calf was found dead by forest staff in Kaziranga National Park on Monday. Park authorities said the rhino calf died in a tiger attack.  "We found the carcass of a rhino calf near Jamuguri area in Kohora forest range today (Monday). It was a five-month-old male calf," said a park official, adding that preliminary investigation suggests the calf was attacked by a tiger and sustained severe injuries. "The rhino calf was attacked by a tiger two or three days ago and later succumbed to its injuries. The tiger had also eaten up almost half of the body by the time we found it," he said.
