I wont be surprised if its a male gaur.
Ive seen pictures of more male gaurs killed by tigers than females.
The reason could be that male gaurs usually travel alone or in small bachelor herds.

This is the sambar hunt observed by Valmik Thapar. However, this picture don't make them justice. In other pictures, of the same event, the sambar looks massive.

Hi Guate,
If possible do post those pictures.
Thanks

Here are some images of this incredible fight between the tigress and the huge Sambar. There are other pictures, but my book is not in the best shape, so I can't scan some pages. However, this are the most impresive of the images. Enjoy the post, just remember that at the end, the Sambar managed to scape but died from the injures a few days latter.

"Wounded and incapacitated by tiger attack
After entering Kohora we spotted this huge water buffalo lying wounded and incapacitated by tiger.
On the third day as we were returning, we found it dead."

This is what the photographer said in one of his comments

"I have checked with forest department personnel and they confirmed that it was a tiger attack. At some distance away we saw carcass of another water buffalo killed by tiger. It was within Kohora range of Kaziranga"

This is a record shot of a Gaur killed by Tiger. Came across the carcass in Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve.
Tiger is the most cunning creature I have seen. It uses its enormous strength, as well as cunning and agility to bring down such huge fellows.

FIRST KILL

This Ammanalah male cub got separated from the family that morning, while looking for his family wondering in Banbai area of the park, he saw some Chital deer drinking water. He slowly started to stalk the deer and he broke cover but manage to catch a young fawn which I think was his first kill. It took him an hour to finish his breakfast and move on to find his family again. I was very luck that morning for no other jeep arrived that area the entire time...

Lucky break for the young male, hopefully he finds his momma soon. Jungle is no place for a cub un protected.
