Debugging Jamhol - Nemesis_19 - 12-27-2023

Can anyone tell me the story of Jamhol?

Is Mahaman his father, or is Dotty his mother?

Why do you think Mahaman/Dotty are allowing him to stay?

Is it because of his submission due to his broken fang?

Can tigers with a broken fang still be deadly to other tigers?

Since Mahaman will soon lose dominance, can Jamhol be the next successor, is he worthy?

Jamhol is likely the son of Mahaman male, who came from outside the tourist area. Mahaman and Dotty allowing him to stay is a mystery, but he was clearly submissive and was taking care of Dotty's cubs. Mahaman has not been seen this season, he likely has been pushed out already. Jamhol and New Jobhi male are frequently seen in Magdhi and Jamhol has been frequently seen in Tala and even a couple of times in Dhamokhar. He may have got into a fight with Chakradhara male in Tala already. So far, he's doing fine.

Thank you for the insightful reply.

So, as per my speculation, the reason for his submission is most likely his broken fang, am I right?

Does the broken fang cause him any significant disadvantage in hunting or territorial fights?

Also, what are the odds that Jamhol pushed out Mahaman?

Thanks and regards.

@Nemesis_19, Jamhol is most definitely the son of Mahaman male but his origin is from the core non-tourism area of Bandhavgarh.

The first sighting of Jamhol was in July 2021 when the parks were about to close for monsoon. He was about 15-16 months old, definitely not a full adult. At the same time, there was another massive male who was sighted for the first time. This male was then seen fighting and besting Chota Bheem (was also bigger). The video of this interaction is on this website itself.

The most likely conclusion is that this massive Core male had killed the siblings of Jamhol and had followed him into his father’s territory where Jamhol took refuge. Since then, this massive Core male has not been seen again.

What happened with Dotty female tolerating him is a bit peculiar. Jamhol was a guardian for her litter of 4 daughters fathered by Mahaman. This has been observed amongst tigers but with own cubs from previous litters. Never an unfamiliar male staying with the family, though.

Also tells you there are dynamics in tiger society we don’t yet know and understand. Cases like this open our eyes further.
