240 kg for bengal tigers and 180 kg for asiatic lions? We usually deal with numbers like 220 kg and 160 kg...I think these numbers are more realistic. BTW 220 kg tiger is still impressive monster. And even 160 kg lion is definitely no joke.
BTW I have a book about from Czech zoologist Zdenek Veselovsky (in my country even more respected than V.Mazak) who studied tigers in Kaziranga. This book is about Kaziranga (tigers, rhinos, birds, etc.) and he says that adult bengal tiger is 220-230 kg. Interesting that various sources give basically the same (or simmilar) weights...

sanjay, thanks. those sites lot of info but actual online booking info and which gate and how to do is nowhere given. we get so many photos on the forum from nagarhole. i am sure few of us already visited there. could anyone help please

I'm convinced that Gabbar and Choti Tara were victims of wrong estimations after that response.. 85kg for her is an obvious give-away and a tiger of Gabbar's size at 185kg. very doubtful.

Can you show us what you asked him specifically? Do the weights that he show represent an average.
Also, can you contact them and ask how many tigers they have collared and/or weighed? I would contact them myself but I do not want to spam them.

This was the exact email I sent, the reply wasn't really detailed but straight to the point. Also, when Gabbar and Choti Wara were radio-collared. the WII team never weighed them and grossly underestimated their weights. Everyone i spoke to also agreed that an adult female from Tadoba weighing 85kg is impossible, that's the weight of a dying and malnourished tigress and Choti Tara is pretty big. Gabbar also was misquoted as 185kg and was never weighed.
Besides the Panna males from Central India, the only adult male they managed to get their hands on also was too big for the 200-220kg dosage that they thought he would require, the dosage would've worked well on a male tiger of that size but this male proved to be too big and required an additional 1.2 ml dosage.

The Adult female : 145kg
The Adult male : over 200kg + (2.5ml dosage that works well for a tiger around 200-220kg failed on this guy, an additional dosage of 1.2ml was required)
The Sub-adult male : 180kg
After carefully analyzing everything, I've come to a conclusion that they didn't have a scale capacity of over 200kg and that was the very maximum they could do with that male tiger. safe bet?

Interesting thing to note is the difference between the weights of male and female collars from the Pench study, 1.3kg for males and 0.763kg for females. that's an eye-opener for me and it further proofs that radio-collars are nothing but featherweight to tigers. from Dr.Yadvendradev's email extract, Guate, Peter, KingT, Apollo, Amnon and tigerluver's contributions.
The weights are pretty much the same, maybe Dr.Yadvendradev included the stomach contents so even if you subtract about 14kg from the weights.. they all come down to about the same average that Guate, Peter and Tigerluver published on this forum.

Interesting. Based on your email, it sounds like he was giving an average (240 kg).
The only reason I ask is because the message is not very specific. I would still like to know how many tigers weighings he has witnessed besides the three you posted above.

To be sincere, I think that the email of Dr Jhala is not giving "average" figures but "maximum" figures known by him. After all, I heavily doubt that modern Indian lions average 180 kg or male tigers average 240 kg (the same for females). For me, all the figures look like maximum figures.
Other important thing, remember that some tigers were weighed in Kanha? Two of them were large adult males, among them the famous Konda (T-7). It is possible that this weight of 240 kg (unbaited) could belong to this famous male (T-7), or to the other male captured (Punchkatta - T-6)?

that's interesting and i remember you talking about a tiger named "Saja" from Kanha that also weighed around 240kg.. Do you still have the source? It would be nice if we can sort this out with Dr.Jhala. [img]images/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

The only thing to be careful about when estimating weights per Tranq' dose size is the fact that its not quite 100% accurate. I:E: Animals not being put to sleep after first dose, or waking up early, etc.
I think a few factors come into play like addrenaline that can affect the outcome.
But obviously its just an estimation so its better than nothing.

Not a chance, and the 185kg for Gabbar is way to low IMO.
These are estimates for sure, and some scientists estimate far to low and even the alleged weights we hears sometimes are very vague from their sources. Like the Romeo 180kg est then the others saying that was not true at all. 85kg for any Tiger is either very young or extremely sick. I think the rule of thumb should be this
Territory holding, good shape males are 200-230kg females 150-180kg, Bigger specimens are the exception but not uncommon. At least that seems what all available data points to.
Also @Roflcopters, great research and taking the time to email. Always good to get these guys opinions, tfs.
