Dereck Joubert: " One carmine alone is the stuff of dreams … But you never see a single bird. Walk along the banks of the river and you will find a colony: a thousand birds together. It’s like an explosion on Murano, the place where they make Venetian glass. It’s as if someone had raided the island’s rubbish-tip and gathered tons and tons of shards and splinters of the brightest chandeliers, candelabra, tropical fish, cockerels, mermaids, horses, temple-maidens, clowns and loving-cups and hurled them into the air for the sun to turn them, at a stroke, from kitsch into perfect beauty. "

(A truly wonderful description from ’The Sacred Combe’ by Simon Barnes.)
