RE: Big herbivores! - Spalea - 05-24-2020 Beverly Joubert: " Spending time with rhinos is both emotional and inspiring. These lumbering animals are a marvel to photograph; their powerful presence is made all the more humbling when one considers the fragility of their existence. Rhinos need our attention. Right now, our biggest drive is to reveal their beauty, and also the atrocities they are forced to face. Along with an array of other photographers, conservationists, charity organisations and filmmakers, we recently supported an initiative launched by @graeme.green to create a #NewBigFive of wildlife. The project celebrates the world's species, both big and small, through photography and helps raise awareness about the threats they face. Although the rhino has always been a part of the #BigFive, it still makes my list as I think Africa is epitomised by large iconic mega fauna and predators. With rhinos being poached at a rate of one every seven hours, our camera lenses that capture them now may save them later. You can read more about this wonderful initiative at @newbig5project." If you observe closely, you will notice that the both horns have been cut off. This isn’t an act of poaching. Rather, this is routinely done by the Rangers to ensure that the animal is not targeted by poachers. The horns grow back and once they reach a particular size, the Rangers will repeat the process. You can also see that there is a small white chip embedded in the horn, most likely for tracking. " RE: Big herbivores! - Sanju - 06-03-2020 The truth about hippos: herbivore or cannibal?
