Mala Mala December:
Northern Avocas:
Both males were with the three lionesses and cubs from the Nkuhuma pride north of Mlowathi Dam. On the 17th, one male was with the lionesses and cubs from the Nkuhuma pride south of Mlowathi Dam. The same male was at Mlowathi Dam the following day. Both males were found at Mlowathi Dam on the 19th before they followed vulture activity leading them to the members of the Nkuhuma pride. The last two sightings for the month were of one male at Mlowathi Dam on the 28th and the 29th.
Nkuchuma pride:
The first sighting of the month was on the 4th when the three lionesses, seven cubs and both Northern Avoca males were north of Mlowathi Dam. Almost two weeks later, on the 17th, the three lionesses, their seven cubs and one Northern Avoca male were south of Mlowathi Dam. The following day the lionesses and cubs were east of the Mlowathi River, opposite Mlowathi Dam, without the company of the Northern Avoca male. The next day they hadn't moved too far and were north of the Nwana Nononshameni Donga with very little remains of an impala kill. When vultures descended into the area the two Northern Avoca males who were at Mlowathi Dam linked up with the lionesses and cubs. The last sighting of members of this pride was on the 26th when one lioness and eight of the sub-adults were east of Tlebe Rocks.
Southern Avocas:
Both the males were in the Sand River west of Charleston Rock. A couple of days later, on the 21st, both males were with members of the Sand River pride at Charleston Rock.
Sand River pride:
This month, the only sighting of the Sand River pride was on the 21st, when two females and six cubs were with the Southern Avoca males near Charleston Rock.

The Southern Avocas are beautiful beasts. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of them separately. They are always together and seem to have one of the strongest bonds I’ve seen between males in a coalition. I wish we could get more footage of their daily lives, similar to their northern brothers, but I don’t think much filming happens in their territory.
As stated on the other thread, glad to see DM again, looking well fed and in good condition. Even though he’s been very thin before and hardly moving, I was still concerned with his condition over the past few weeks. It doesn’t take much for a lion to be taken out of play and being somewhat immobile and not getting food doesn’t help. Hopefully he and the sub-adults will continue to stay well fed and safe.

DM and the Talamatis today on WE. Though he recently had a meal he still looks pretty rough which is concerning. He’s lost a lot of muscle mass and is very skinny. I hope he’s not battling some type of illness on top of the lack of nutrition. Also his face has a very ugly scar. Don’t know if that’s from fighting with the pride over food or encountering another dominant male. Whatever is going on with him, I hope his condition starts to improve soon.
