Two male lions killing an adult giraffe, but the photograph, because badly situated, failed to film the kill... After the whole pride came to eat, as well as a big herd of buffalos...

Once upon a time, a hippo lived in a water hole about a kilometer north of our camp. One night, that hippo went out grazing, as he did every evening. Unfortunately, he never made it home. A group of hungry lions were lying in ambush, and hunted the hippo down just a few hundred meters from his little pool.

In the interest of science, I've decided to document where those 3 tons of hippo meat go, day by day. Here's the carcass about 12 hours after the hippo was killed. Two male lions were at the kill, and from the size of their bellies, they had apparently been gorging themselves all night.

These guys were already so full that they could barely breathe. They'd nibble half-heartedly on some meat, then waddle away a few feet and lie down to rest and digest.

In 12 hours, the lions have barely made a dent in the massive carcass. However, they haven't had any competition for their prize yet. We'll have to wait to see what happens overnight.

@Rishi, it’s like the jaguars’ behaviour from Central Americas. So, lions have become regular on the coast now (remember when a lioness died swimming off the coast on a small island).
If the Gujarat govt doesn’t move them, they will themselves spread to MP in a decade or so. Instead, they have the chance to look as magnanimous as the Assamese govt with letting Rhinos go to different state. I am guessing the tourism lobby is strong here.

Not a decade, but 2050 maybe. I'm guessing you've missed THIS
Rajasthan first... Probably MP from there, but there aren't any direct connecting corridors through the industrial belt. They'll can pass through little Kutchh & Mehsana district after they reach Jamnagar coast.

The study has also given Dan first-hand experience of lions’ opportunism: “In one five-day period the pair of male lion killed two buffalo calves, a mountain zebra stallion and an eland bull!” He’s also been amazed by the lioness’s hunting prowess: “Over the year, she has killed three eland bulls, a phenomenal achievement for a lone lioness.”

Lions kill a bull buffalo
The buffalo bull was standing in the water of a small stream, with a young lioness on his rump with her claws dug into his flanks. As the buffalo moved around the lioness just hung on and moved around with him, making it impossible for him to shake her off. Although it was very harsh and at times difficult to watch, we watched for over an hour. Eventually they succeeded and killed the “brave old man”.

Lioness kill a crocodile to protect cubs
I was planning on sleeping in this morning when Kazembo woke me up. "Madam, Madam!" I shot up thinking, lodge is on fire, there is a riot and I am all alone, someone's drowned. no. "A crocodile has been killed by rion and George is taking car to go there!" " I'll be right there! " I yelled back as I flew out of my bed and into my tracksuit, at the door I paused and realized I was wearing my pink sleeping shirt, a practical come hither sign for any dangerous animals that might be keen for some animal on girl action. I ripped my shirt off, put on a brown earthy one in its place, grabbed my hat and camera (praying the battery wasn't flat) and flew outside where George was revving the ancient landcruiser. Kazembo stood by the laundry table folding a sheet in slow motion longingly staring at the vehicle. "Well are you coming???" and that's all it took to get him to join our impromptu game drive. It was about 8:30 am and what had happened was the lions and their cubs had been feeding on an unfortunate impala right opposite chalet 1 (as I slept!!!) when a lazy crocodile decided to waddle up and stir some sh*t hoping to get a piece of the action. The lionesses were not having it, there are 3 of them adults and 4 young ones, the impala was hardly enough to go around as is. So while the kids were at a safe distance the other 2 must have wrestled with the crocs hind legs eventually breaking them while the larger/older female went for the jugular and ripped it open leaving the crocodile with a huge gash exposing tissue, veins, and air tubes. When we got to the scene the croc had gone comatose to preserve his energy, I thought he was doornail dead. While we went hunting for the lions who we found in the shade nearby vultures got wind of the story and immediately began to congregate. As I write they must now be in their hundreds shamelessly waiting for the croc to give up the ghost. Not wanting to be eaten alive the croc would occasionally raise his head and snarl at the vultures who were duly warned but not intimidated. They know its just a matter of time.
