RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - KM600 - 12-05-2023 (12-05-2023, 01:14 AM)Mapokser Wrote: @Tr1x24 Kambulas chased some subadults, but never got females to mate. 100% the BDMs need to make a statement, I wouldn’t be surprised if as tensions heat up even the Ndzhengas are somehow involved as they’ve wandered far North quite a few times recently. They also weren’t watching K4 mate, 3 of the brothers were roaring and K4 responded further into Chitwa Chitwa, neither Nkuhuma females or their sister have been seen with the 3 brothers as of late. The Kambula YMs are looking big but their lack of experience might sell them short, I always view a scenario where the resident males being possibly challenged by a bigger coalition as kind of a game of bluffs. The smaller coalition just needs to appear as tho they’re willing to risk everything and it might not even come to a fight. Like with the Southern Avocas against Nkhulu coalition, do I really think the Southern Avocas would have willingly charged at 7 males all together, no, but they made it seem as they were willing to take that risk and it worked for a short amount of time. The BDMs need to convince the Kambula YMs, their territory isn’t worth the altercation and there’s easier territory to take over. RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Cath2020 - 12-05-2023 I'm not sure if the BDMs will fight tooth and nail for the pride, though, since they haven't been with them for very long, even though they've been in the area for around a year now. It only just started to appear that things might change very recently....in the last few weeks, what with them taking over the pride. However, they suddenly have a bigger problem with larger coalitions around that may be interested. They are just only now turning 6 years old....so they must have come when they either just turned 5 or right before. They are still young and do not need to risk it all for the NK Pride. They also do not have cubs to defend yet, so they might not see it in their interests to fight 4 vs 2 for unrelated females, when they could leave again to find another pride. The young males in the NK Pride might benefit if they do not go to war. I think the two 2021 males are in real trouble if the Kambula Young Males decide to go all out for a takeover. I don't see them being as tolerant or cozy with them at all. RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Mapokser - 12-05-2023 If the Ndhzengas are smart they'll stay away, this is none of their business. They can easily shift their territoty a bit east and south, and chill, the Kambulas won't try to take over their natal pride. RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - KM600 - 12-05-2023 (12-05-2023, 05:50 AM)Cath2020 Wrote: I'm not sure if the BDMs will fight tooth and nail for the pride, though, since they haven't been with them for very long, even though they've been in the area for around a year now. They are just only now turning 6 years old....so they must have come when they either just turned 5 or right before. They are still young and do not need to risk it all for the NK Pride. I somewhat agree but I think at this point the BDMs are aware Nkuhuma Pride is the only major pride in the North, they lose that territory and they have zero access to females unless they go South. What prides would be more readily available in the south? They could go to the Mbiri, Nharu Pride...for example...There are fewer then 3 pride males in each. Even the B'ham Pride only has the aging Mbiri duo... I'll admit, I'd hate for them to have to lose their territory after a year, but is it worth fighting 4 males over? Supposing it comes down to that.... I'm just thinking that it's not worth it when they haven't gotten any cubs to fight to the death over, however if they are more patient, they could eventually have a pride with cubs of their own. Time will tell if the KYMs are serious or not. RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Mapokser - 12-05-2023 @Cath2020 Cubs don't make lions more willing to fight, females in estrus do, they will defend cubs if they're seeing something attacking them, but won't think "damn I have to put more effort in defending the territory than normal because I have cubs". Never mind fighting to the death, some lions may die in such disputes initiated by them, but they'd be risking their lives with the perspective of defending the territory and keeing the benefits that comes with it, not with cubs in mind. Only the females sacrifices themelves for the cubs. The bond between male and cubs exist and not hurting them is in the interest of the males, sometimes they even share food with cubs, but for what I see it's more out of a paternal instinct than an actual bond/love like they share between coalition partners. For the BDM they have everything to lose, they have just taken over a big pride and are mating with a bunch of females. Of course it doesn't mean they'll be willing to engage 4 males, what I'm saying, or rather my point is that they wouldn't be any more motivated if they had cubs, if anything they'd be a bit less motivated if they had no current females in heat. As for other possibilities further north, sure they'd have plenty, though the aging Mbiris you talk about are still probably the strongest duo ever seen, this might change in the next years but as of right now they're much stronger than the BDM. Was on about heading South from where they currently are, either through Londolozi to the West or straight South to Umkumbe. Don’t know anything about the Mbiris apart from them controlling the Birmingham Pride and looking set to seemingly overtake their natal pride, heard the one they call ‘Shaka’ is meant to be Mr T reincarnated. What have they done to achieve such a status? So it's definitely possible. They look a bit young to me though, Red Road's boys are all quite big and bulky now. Then again their time as nomads will have made life harder on them, they wouldn't have had a pride of lionesses to constantly provide food so could be that's why they look less developed. RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Tonpa - 12-05-2023 From their behaviour I thought they might be from somewhere with not a lot of cars, in September they were scared of the vehicles and stayed in the bushes. At yesterdays sighting the older looking one has calmed down but the younger boy is still vehicle-shy *This image is copyright of its original author
