RE: The mighty Mapogos - fursan syed - 08-05-2017 Saturday, June 11, 2011 Mapogo and Ximungwe Pride Posted by Greg Coates All members of the coalition and the Ximungwe pride were seen this last week. The major sighting though was when Makhulu and Sataan brought down a young hippo just after sunrise near Skwenga Dam. With so much meat they stayed in the area of the kill for most of the week, but were joined by the female with the oldest cubs and the female with the youngest cubs towards the end. The other three females and the middle cubs spent most of the week together in the southern and eastern parts of the concession and did not take part in the hippo feast. *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author
RE: The mighty Mapogos - fursan syed - 08-05-2017 Saturday, June 11, 2011 Skorro Mapogo and Shinzele Male Leopard Posted by Greg Coates Shinzele had an interesting week, starting off with a confrontation with Mashiyambanje. The river is definitely the boundary between these two males as Shinzele stayed on the southern bank and Mashiyambanje on the northern bank. There was not much aggression but it seemed both leopards were daring each other to cross the line and start a fight. This did not happen though and they seemed content to respect each other’s space and eventually moved in opposite directions. Shinzele’s other exciting moment was when he found himself rudely forced up a tree by members of the Ximungwe pride and Skoro Mapogo. He did have a kill and had managed to get it up a tree in time so all he had to do was sit it out. This he did and the lions eventually moved off in search of a meal of their own. *This image is copyright of its original author
RE: The mighty Mapogos - fursan syed - 08-06-2017 Friday, July 22, 2011 Mapogo and Ximungwe Pride Posted by Greg Coates The big news of the week is the unveiling of the two new additions to the pride, two 10 week old cubs! The mothers of the middle and youngest cubs are spending all their time together while the oldest female still chooses to keep the oldest cubs apart from the pride. The pride enjoyed a lot of success with numerous kills including a buffalo cow, a waterbuck and an impala. As usual the Mapogo claimed the lions share and looked like bloated ticks as they tried to find the most comfortable position to rest. *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author
RE: The mighty Mapogos - fursan syed - 08-06-2017 Friday, July 22, 2011 Mapogo and Ottawa Pride Posted by Greg Coates The Ottawa pride has undergone some recent changes with the two young males spending more time away from the pride and one of the cubs being killed. The three remaining females and one youngster are looking good however and also enjoyed some success by bringing down a huge male kudu near the Sand River. Their benefit was only short lived though as the nearby Mapogo moved in and stole the kill during the evening even though they were satiated with buffalo. The Ottawa pride moved east off our concession thereafter and will probably look to avoid their fathers for the foreseeable future. RE: The mighty Mapogos - fursan syed - 08-06-2017 Monday, August 15, 2011 Mapogo and Ottawa Pride Posted by Greg Coates The two young males from the Ottawa pride appear to have left the pride now and were seen on one occasion around the eastern parts of the concession. They were tailing the large herd of buffalo and were given a hard time as the herd chased them off every time they ventured too close. There were harder times to come however as their fathers, the Mapogo, caught wind of them and marched south during the night to chase the youngsters out of their territory. The two youngsters were split up in the chaos but managed to avoid a serious confrontation and eventually met up again to the east where they seem to be laying low. RE: The mighty Mapogos - fursan syed - 08-06-2017 Tuesday, September 27, 2011 Mapogo Posted by Greg Coates The Mapogo have been all over the place this last week, including all the way east on to Londolozi! Word is that the Majingilane coalition has moved further north so maybe the brothers have sensed this and are exploring to find more females as all of the Ximungwe pride have cubs or are pregnant and the three Ottawa females are too young to mate. They did take down a buffalo just east of our boundary but returned a few days later, roaring their presence and making sure that the two young Ottawa males or the Southern pride males do not think of trespassing. *This image is copyright of its original author
RE: The mighty Mapogos - fursan syed - 08-06-2017 Thursday, September 1, 2011 Mapogo and Ximungwe Pride Posted by Greg Coates The Mapogo returned from the east early in the week where they had finished off a buffalo carcass. They wasted no time in meeting up with four of the Ximungwe lionesses and cubs and on closer inspection it was revealed that a fourth lioness from the pride has given birth. She was lactating heavily and later on in the week three very small cubs were sighted on top of a rocky outcrop. One of the 3 month old cubs has however disappeared so the total number of cubs in the pride is now 8. Makhulu singled out the remaining lioness that does not have cubs and has stayed close to her throughout the week while the rest of the pride, except the oldest female and oldest cubs, has continued to move as a unit. On one morning they were able to kill a young Kudu but Skoro was close by and stole most of it. The 3 month old cub was very bold though and battled his older sibling for the spoils and even challenged Skoro a few times who unceremoniously swatted him away with a huge paw! *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author
RE: The mighty Mapogos - fursan syed - 08-06-2017 Thursday, October 27, 2011 Mapogo Posted by Greg Coates The Mapogo have been on and off the property again for the last few weeks and have enjoyed a lot of hunting success as they were seen with no less than four kills, two buffalo, one kudu and one hippo calf. Skoro has also elected to spend some time away from the coalition and has been hanging out with the Ximungwe pride while Makhulu and Sataan have been staying together. *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author
RE: The mighty Mapogos - Fredymrt - 08-07-2017 Friday, June 24, 2011 Posted by greg coates Mapogo and the Ximungwe pride All the Mapogo and the Ximungwe pride were seen again in the last two weeks. On one occasion all five adult lionesses were seen together which has not happened for many months. The older and middle aged cubs are still doing well, but we have yet to see the youngest cubs that must be almost 2 months old now already. The big news however came from the east where it was rumoured that the three Mapogo brothers had the long awaited clash with the younger coalition of four males known as the Majingilane, and this was barely four days after the Majingilane had killed one of the young Southern pride males. What exactly happened is unclear as nobody witnessed it but when the Mapogo returned west they were visibly beaten. All three brothers had gashes and limps but at least all three are still alive. If the brothers are looking worse for wear it would be interesting to see what their opponents are looking like! So while it seems like the lion dynamics in the Sabi Sands are hotting up, it seems as though that the aging Mapogo are not going to give up without a fight and for the moment they are still the kings of the western sector. *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author http://gregcoatesphotography.blogspot.com/2011/06/wild-dog-den-pack-is-gone.html?m=0 RE: The mighty Mapogos - fursan syed - 08-11-2017 October 2011 Mapogoo and Ottawa Pride Posted by Greg Coates These three young females have been spending quite a lot of time in the west which is perhaps a result of the Mapogos spending more time in the east. They are looking very healthy and always seem well fed so their hunting skills must already be finely honed even without the presence of older females. This is a relief after the both adult females were lost recently and the two young males came of age and left the pride, leaving the three young sisters to fend for themselves. It is hoped that they will settle in the southern parts of the concession where the Ximungwe pride seem to have abandoned their previous territory. RE: The mighty Mapogos - LionKiss - 09-03-2017 At the End he is not giving the true Story. The Mapogos were NOT "Hammered One by One". Only KT was "hammered" by other Lions in a 1 vs 4 fight because the Mapogos were split due to the Huge territory they controlled. and of course in March 2012 MrT was not hammered because they have split due to the huge territory MrT, Mak and PB controlled. Mak, PB were not Hammered Rasta was not Hammered, he just disappeared, and Dreadlocks was poached. Obviously they do not want to accept the fact that poaching took place in a private area as Sabi Sands, for years pronounced as a "Poached-Free" territory. But Mr Botha for sure knows what really took place. RE: The mighty Mapogos - HouseOfLions - 09-03-2017 (09-03-2017, 04:37 PM)LionKiss Wrote:This is very interesting dude.Quote:sik94 We all know that the Mapogos liked to patrol in alone or in pairs of 2. So I believe that after this incident, Rusta and PB were patrolling the eastern boundary and came up upon the manginjis, or at the very least, rasta did. They fought and injured him badly and when PB came to help, he also got beat. But they got out alive and as many believe, they went into hiding in an area that was inaccessible by rangers. This is where rusta passed away but PB (as his name suggests - the undying Pheonix) - came out of the ashes with only a few injuries and as bent spine. But again, this is all assumption as well. RE: The mighty Mapogos - IñigoMontoya - 09-03-2017 The only true is Rasta disappeared and It was a hard blow for the Mapogos. The discussion is absurd nowadays. Fans Majingilane wants to believe were theirs favorites lions who defeated Mapogos. Fans Mapogos wants to believe Rasta was poached or humans had something to do. But if this was true and it could be demostrated, that would not fix anything. That if I'm tired to hear that a video with only roars in the night shows a battle between Mapogos and Majingilane. If we saw videos of battles between lions without images I doubt we could differentiate if they are males, lioness, males vs males, males vs lioness, lioness vs lioness etc etc. (In fact, many rangers say that the only roar they recognized was that of Makulu Mapogo because this was only). Please this video dont shows anything. Only roars in the night. And you are right, it could have been anyone that was fighting that day.
