Lions

  • The single mother, the Nkuhuma lioness, has been thriving along the Sand River and surrounds. She successfully hunted a massive waterbuck bull that fed her and her two one-year-old offspring for three days, and surprisingly managed to keep a large clan of hyena at bay. This sighting was sensational, taking place in the Hukumuri drainage, we not only witnessed hyenas, vultures, and lions but two different leopards hoping to scavenge a piece of the kill.
  • The Mhangene Pride and the Plains Camp male lions trail the large herd of buffalo that are currently grazing in the south. The condition of the lioness with the limp seems to be improving and she is now moving at the front of the pride showing how resilient these big cats are. This environment can be harsh even for the most feared predators. We are anticipating the pride to grow in numbers in the weeks to come.
  • In the beginning of December there were a few sightings of two new male lions, the Black Dam male lions in Othawa. This part of the reserve has been a frequent hunting ground for the Talamati Pride which still seems nomadic in their movement, wandering from the far north all the way to the deep south of the Sabi Sand in just a few days.

Holy cow so it is true Skorro Jr and NK were seen together?

Things get crazier and crazier in the Western Sector. Whatever happens I can only hope the prides there can thrive.

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Tonpa - 01-04-2023

I guessing NKM was laying down in a bush or something and it was a bad shot so he used that vid

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Duco Ndona - 01-04-2023

Might be. It could be a case of Hanlons razor.

But even if the two were hanging out together. Its just one sighting. One meeting does not make a coalition so even if we had perfect pictures, it doesn't mean a thing.

Drives me up the wall when content makers do that. It just calls their credibility into question hence I didn't subscribe to any of them. I'd much prefer they state the situation with the caveat that footage is not available for whatever reason is applicable at the time. Same goes for randomly posting a video or old pic without a date stamp leading to the inevitable 'when, where, who and how?' posts on here.

Rant over, lol.

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - GhostCatP-22 - 01-05-2023

Thinking about the suspected PCM and Nhenha fight have the other male lions in surrounding area accounted for? Is Mohawk Avoca or the Talamati boys missing or seen with wounds? Could the Manghenis have got ahold of a male?
Just wondering and theorizing the above questions/statements are just examples I thought of…not saying these situations for sure happened.

Marthly Pride

  • The Marthly lioness was enjoyed on three days this month. On Christmas Eve, she was north of the Airstrip. On Christmas Day, she was at Marthly Crossing. The last time she was seen for the year was on the 29th when she was at Elephant Rock Lookout.
Sand River Pride
  • MalaMala’s most stable pride were only viewed on one day this month. The area of their territory is in the southern reaches of MalaMala, and with 90 other lion sightings recorded for the month, there was little urgency to make the expedition to find this pride. The presence of a new coalition of six males also appeared to keep members of this pride away from central and western Charleston for the first 10 days of the month. On the day they were seen, the 24th, they made it worthwhile by killing an impala ewe in the Sand River, at Ingwe Donga.

Torchwood Pride
  • Four lionesses with eight cubs were seen on the 10th, southeast of Clarendon Dam. The second, and final time members of this pride were seen was on the 16th, when six members were north of Clarendon Dam.
Other Lions Encountered:
• Six male lions made their debut on MalaMala on the 4th. The NKUHLU MALES, rumoured to be a coalition of 9, hail from the Kruger National Park. They were seen on Charleston on the 4 th and 5th, and then on Toulon on the 7th .
• Three unknown young males were seen on the 14th. Two were together north of the Nwana Nonashemeni Donga. The other attempted to hunt buffalo at Paraffin Drift.
• Three lionesses and five cubs from the STYX PRIDE were at Pole in the Road on the 17th. One female and one cub were at Trollip’s Camp on the 22nd .
• The BLACK DAM MALES made their first appearance on MalaMala on the 19th, when they were west of Mlowathi Dam. On the 22nd, 23rd, and 25th, they were at Clarendon Dam. They were at the Old Borehole on the 30th and killed a buffalo bull in this area on the 31st .
• An NO ID female was at Buffalo Pans on the 28th, she was shy of vehicles

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - criollo2mil - 01-06-2023

“ The Ximungwe lioness let’s all know who now rules this land.

It’s ironic how in the last year she went from being a loner after losing her daughter to now being the most dominant lioness within most of the Western Sector.”

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Tr1x24 - 01-06-2023

Gingerella was not in the mood, but PC males dont tolerate that, hope they dont harm her :
