RE: Birmingham Coalition Male Lineage - Mapokser - 05-25-2023

Very few lions will remain in power for 10 years, take Sabi Sands lions for example, not even the Majingilane with their legendary reign got close to that, stopping at 8, other big coalitions like Bboys and Mapogos only ruled for 6 years and the Southern Matimbas for 9 years which might be the longest confirmed reign but they got very lucky because they were ousted 3 times, first by Bboys, then they got a new territory almost immediately in Majingilane vacated territory, then were ousted by Matshipiri and wandered nomadically for 1 year before miraculously becoming dominant again over the Majingilane's western territory after all 3 died of hunger/old age out of nowhere.

The only coalition that might have ruled for this long were the West Street Males, but even then we can only confirm for sure 8 years of rule since Londolozi's report about them first showing up is ambiguous, as well as the reports on their age being contradictory.

The average for a coalition to remain in power is 2-4 years.

Over an individual pride yes. I was more refering to that each coalition has in theory the potential to remain in power for 10 years. Producing 2 or 3 new coalitions in the proces. They rarely do so, yes. But if no competition arives, thats the time they have to produce and protect offspring.

Ultimately, each time a new coalition enters an area, another one has to leave. (With nomadic groups being in the process of doing so).
The one that leaves is typically the weaker ones. Which often the young and experienced are.

10 years in power in the wild? That would mean the males and coalitions stay in power from roughly 5-6 years old to 15-16ish years old. I'd say very rare and not likely they hold the same territory for 10 years.

RE: Birmingham Coalition Male Lineage - Duco Ndona - 05-26-2023

Correct. Its a hypothetical max based on age etc. Not something I expect to see myself. Merely to point out how many new coalitions a single male can produce theoretically.

Its more to point out how its not abnormal to see a high amount of casualties among male lions. Its needed to offset that.

Not necessarily. Prides break up and breakaways might become vacant uncontested spot if there is enough space for a territory in betwen existing coalitions. Current Nkuhuma breakaways would be a good relatively recent example, Plain Camps didn't have to fight to tkae over them. Plus lone lionesses are often unclaimed/neglected by coalitions in the area and they tend to be outside the core pride (and thus coalitions as well to an extent) territories.

Another question would how long would coaliting "lucking" into such females would be content with having just them, so a conflict usually hapeens anyway just somewhat later and thus one colaition indeed has to make room for another. Excluding atypical cases like Solo being accepted as a coliation partner rather having to take over. Just wanting to say that number of prides in an rea is not fixed and constant as ell as the density of population and availability of space to be territorial over fluctuates as well.

I am aware of that. But even with such events taken into account, it isn't enough to fully solve the surplus male issue.

Yes you where right, K3 was there:

Way too far to see the face clearly, and the shadow of the tree prevents us form properly seeing the mane, so unfrotunately we cant tell without better photos

Definitely looks like him, this will be good for NK considering how everyone seems to be after him the last few weeks.

Great news.

Talamati or Skorro young male.

Prob Talamati based of dark mane.

RE: Birmingham Coalition Male Lineage - criollo2mil - 05-28-2023

New sighting of the two.   Looks like the Talamati boy is not happy to have Nkuhuma trail him?

Establishing hierarchies?
