RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Tonpa - 03-08-2022

"The Southern Pride lioness and her two cubs have slowly been moving into the Northern sector of Sabi Sabi. This has been due to the sudden presence of three unidentified male lions in her original territory, the Southern sector of Sabi Sabi, and so they have pushed North, assumingly to keep her cubs safe. If this movement becomes permanent, this lioness and her cubs will find themselves deep within the Styx Pride’s territory, yet another threat to the Southern Pride."

Youngs kambula with Nhenha? there is no update of all of them together for a while. This region is quite populated recently, I hope this dynamic doesn't bring conflict between styx and southern pride as both are under reconstruction

Who are those 3 males?
Nhenha and two eldest kakambula boys??

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Tonpa - 03-08-2022

Hopefully they show some pics.

Assuming they aren't youngsters, who would be the closest 3 male coalition? Bayamiti males?

Renosterkoppies males also pretty close. But since N’waswitshaka males are 4 they have numbers advantage.

I don’t think it’s been revealed or Identified.  I doubt they’re referring to any Kambulas or Nhenha since they’re known by the reserve and it would have been said as such?   It’s my hunch.

I read another post that is could be the three renosterkoppies males whom were seen just south of there previously.

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Duco Ndona - 03-08-2022

That may become an issue for the Nwaswitshakas if the three run into Gore on his own.

Lions
  • It would seem as if a new shift has taken place in the world of lion dynamics at Singita Sabi Sand with the new arrivals and changes with existing lions.
  • The Plains Camp males have well and truly taken ownership of the land and continue to show their dominance as we hear their distant roars throughout the night. With these males having spent so much time with the two Nkuhuma lionesses, we are very excited to announce the arrival of at least two new cubs! At this stage we haven’t quite had the chance to view them properly as they are so young, however one of our guides was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the two little fur balls at the beginning of the month, who are denning at the centre of the property. We are looking forward to seeing how the new pride develops from here as both females have mated with the Plains Camp males, however we are yet to see true signs of pregnancy from the amber-eyed female.
  • Closer to the end of the month it seems as if one of the older Mhangene lionesses has also moved away from the pride to mate with the Plains Camp males. We watched in awe one evening as two Mhangene lionesses interacted with the male, both females submitting to him with no aggression from his side, only vocalisation. It was incredible to watch!
  • An interesting turn of events this month has been the joining up of father and son, the last remaining Birmingham male and one of his first offspring, the Nkuhuma male. We aren’t sure what the future holds for these two, however we are glad that they have company.
  • With changes assumedly in the lion dynamics to the north of the reserve, this brought some of the first viewing of the Talamati Pride. This group of eight have spent the majority of the month to the north of the river with one or two appearances to the south of the river, close to the lodges.

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Tr1x24 - 03-08-2022

Its hard to speculate who are these 3 new males without info, apparently they came from the south, Nhenha was north and most recently seen in Umkumbe alone, so its not him with sons.

3 Renosterkoppies males are south /south west of Sabi Sands in Kruger, but so far they never crossed Sand River and into Sabi Sands, Renosterkoppies males are dominant and territorial males so i doubt they would venture all the way thru Lion Sands to Sabi Sabi.. I think these are some nomadic males, which is normal as presence of N'ws is not that strong anymore in Lion Sands and they where not further south in Kruger for prob half a year or so (N'ws where last seen south in Kruger when they chased Dreadlocks DeLaporte from a elephant kill near Skukuza, that was many months ago).

Sabi Sabi said in comments that 1 is more mature and 2 younger males and that they are not Kambula subs.

I’m hearing some are strongly suggesting it may be the Othowa Breakaways.  Might be wishful thinking but isn’t necessarily a crazy possibility.   Until confirmation, we just don’t know.

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Duco Ndona - 03-08-2022

Very likely wishfull thinking.

The last info is that coalition fell apart in Kruger with one presumed death.

Is the supposed death you refer to due to jr othawa being seen alone the last time?

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Duco Ndona - 03-09-2022

Its just based on what we know already.
The group went into Kruger with 4 lions.
Jr, Gingerella and 2 smaller unnamed younger male lions.
A while later Gingerella and one of those younger males returned to the western sector. Where that male lion disappeared.soon afterwards.

Gingerella currently is still nomadic in western sector.
Jr and one of his brothers are currently likely somewhere in Kruger as a coalition of 2. The third male that returned with Gingerella is likely death, as he disapeared in a well covered area, known to be occupied by rival lions. And likely would have sticked with Gingerella if alive.

I dont think any sightings of Jr were good enough to conclude his partner died.

Jr was not seen alone on his last sighting.
