Mapogos vs Skukuzas
The Mapogos fight and defeat a coalition of 4 Males from Skukuza in 2008. Limited info on the conflict but according to this account with Rich Laburn, the Mapogos proved too much for the Skukuza coalition. The result of the conflict was a resounding victory for the Mapogo coalition.
"It's Good that the Legendary Mapogo Coalition is Back, These Lion updates are really great to read and eagerly awaited by many,It seems that the new young males are heading for some rough time as they are battling the Dreaded Mapogo Coalition and perhaps they are not aware of the Mapogos Power ,In 2008 the Mapogos Completely destroyed the Four Skukuza Males and this time also if they catch the intruding young males they are going to Destroy these Four Young males as well. I feel someone should make a Wildlife documentary on the Amazing life of Legendary Mapogos."

What I found about the Skukuza Males (and posted in the thread dedicated to Lions of Sabi Sand) suggests that they went to KNP in 2006. Of course, any more information about this is welcome.

You may never heard of the Mapogo Male Lion Coalition of the Sabi Sands. For years a six male coalition “ruled” the Lion prides in the Sabi Sands. Two of these (now ten year old) Lions are still alive. Today we found and walked these two legendary males. We took a direct approach in which we made sure that the Lions knew we were there. The picture above was taken during the encounter.We approached to about 50 meters (~ 130 feet) when one of the Lions showed some sign of “dis-comfort” with our presence. We extracted slowly (and safely) from the sighting. It was one of the most exciting things I ever done in my life!
We then went back and viewed them from our game viewer.

It was still dark when we left the camp as we tried to get a head start on the sunrise and capture a few photos of dawning of a new day. As we reached the open area with a beautiful view to the east we settled in amongst a herd of zebra, switched off the vehicle and sat in complete silence waiting for the sun to peak its head over the horizon and warm our magical piece of Africa. The sounds of the dawn chorus came in from all directions immediately putting a smile on my face. Suddenly the chorus was interrupted by the unmistakable sound of lions roaring.
As the first two finished roaring another group started to roar in return and so the tennis match of territoriality began. After the sun had peaked we made our way towards where the roaring had originated and it wasn’t long before we found tracks for the Southern pride. We tracked for a while and they were eventually found moving south away from the roaring. As we sat and watched 6 of the females and all 8 cubs we could hear the roaring getting louder. The guests were focused on the lions and I was listening to the radio as some of the other vehicles were trying to find the source of the commotion. Next thing Brett called in that he had just seen one of the Mapogos running at full pace north and roaring at the top of his lungs. The Kruger males were found shortly after that and they too were roaring but their body language was completely different to the mapogo seen bolting away from the Kruger males.
When I eventually joined up with the males they were looking confident and in superb condition. They walked along the road, rubbing their heads through the trees and scent marking as they went along. Suddenly they stopped to listen and we could hear the resounding sound of more males calling in the distance. They returned fire and the sound of that awesome roar echoed through the chilly autumn air leaving my guests and I speechless. It was amazing how often they let the explode from their lungs making sure that all the competition around knew who was the boss of this land.
What happened through the night and early hours of the morning is not completely clear. From what we have pieced together the Mapogos ran into the Majengies and were chased into our reserve, here they were greeted by the belligerent Kruger males who too wanted them out as fast as possible and drove them out.

"What luck. Early in the morning we had heard lions making a big noise in the northern reaches of our reserve but weren’t to sure what was going on. Over the radio came the call that chaos was breaking out in the north. Lions were roaring all over the far north eastern corner of Notten’s. Male lions! The Kruger males were on the prowl. We believe they had made contact with the last two remaining Mapogo males. Roaring carried on and on. We are not too sure if the Eyrefield/Sparta males with Solo were involved but calls of male lions came from all angles. We think the Mapogo were involved in contact with the Kruger males. What was for sure is that the two Kruger males looked large and powerful and full of confidence. They were true male lions today and not sleeping giants. They defended their territory and the Southern pride had time to slip away undetected by other male lions. What a morning, we were so caught up with all the lion action that the time flew past and the drive was nearly over before we knew it. We later found a large herd of wildebeest, zebra and impala calmly feeding, oblivious to the lion politics just over the hill. The pride all look very fit and healthy lately, they ran around and had great games in the cool of the morning. Even the older lioness with the floppy ear got in with the games of the cubs."

"As it stands the remaining two Mapogo Males appear to have thrown in the towel on their old domain and have run south facing pressure from the Majingilane Coalition, the Southern Coalition and the KNP Males. Sightings of these aging males are occurring throughout the south and occasionally central areas of Londolozi, whilst the aspiring Southern Coalition appear to have claimed the entire western section of the Sabi Sands. As the winter draws closer, we can only conjure up guesses as to how this new territorial dominance will shape up and what sequence of events will unfold next, particularly after the Mapogos run in with the Majingilane and KNP Males over this past weekend."

"Okay are you all ready for this. You will love this!!! Lion viewing is mad here at Londolozi of late. Morning update as been difficult to piece together, the animals have been in long grass and have thus been hard to 100% ID but here is my play of things... Tsalala 6 found in the north minding own business. 2 Majingilane (scar nose and golden mane) in our open areas, 5km away to the east 2 Majingilane (dark mane and hip-scar), 2km south Sparta pride lionesses times 2 with 2 of their youngsters, south of that by 2km 4 lionesses (unknown) with a giraffe kill and breathe deeply two males whom after serious id work we BELIEVE to be the Mapogo feeding on the same meat. Then down in our SW we have one lioness (unknown) feeding on a waterbuck kill with breathe deeply one male again this time we BELIEVE to be a KNP male as he apparently had a big limp. MADNESS. Now i only saw Majingilane so im going on others pictures and observations. Will keep posted but as it stands this is heating up for action. Ho many times have we seen blood spilt over large carcasses be they giraffe and/or buffalo. So lion group...who is the male in the SW? Who are the lionesses and are they the Mapogo??? Drum Roll...something must go down!"

"Incredible. Mapogo males are now in the very SW of Londoz. Very close to where they killed the buffalo some days ago. This is the 'vacuum' area that i think exists between majingi, selati and KNP. Its a tiny area..a small clearing with no lionesses and very few animals. may try head there this afternoon."

"We have two of the Mapogos on our property at present. The one is looking particularly beaten and battered and not moving very long distances at this stage. Knowing how tough male lions can be, I’m convinced he will bounce back. One of our guides sat with them last night hoping they would head out hunting or possibly vocalize but unfortunately neither options materialized. They are looking thin and need to hunt/feed soon! Gut feel suggests that they won’t be vocalizing too regularly either and giving their position away as the younger males are still hanging around. MAPOGO MALE LIONS

It has all been happening on Sabi Sabi over the last few days. After the hippo died the predator activity went through the roof with the Southern Pride and the Kruger males feeding off the carcass as well as a huge clan of hyenas.

With all this commotion the Mapogos also found their way down to the southern section of the reserve and although there has not been any interaction seen between the Kruger Males and the Mapogos, we are left to hypothesise what has been happening on the reserve. On the same day the Kruger males and the Mapogos were found relatively close together and the Kruger males seemed to be the lions on the retreat. Could the Mapogos be causing an upset in the chain of command down here in the south?

The other thing that has left us questioning what has been happening during the hours that we all try get some shut eye is the fact that yet another cub has gone missing. There is a good chance that it is with one of the females that is not with the pride at the moment as there are only 3 females together. There is also a possibility that the Mapogos got hold of the cub and have started to dispatch the current litter…

Lion Warfare is so apparent at the moment that the still nights are punctuated by the continual sounds of lion roaring. A wondrous sound, guttural, deep and heart-felt. Deep into the night you can hear these giants as they attempt to sort out territorial disputes and differences.
There are currently six coalitions of lions that are running around, vocalizing and causing havoc. The four Southern Males, the two Kruger National Park Males, the three males being lead by Solo, the four Majingilane Males, the six Matimba Males and then the two Mapogo. With this much firepower in the area, someone is going to give. The general consensus is that it will be the two sole survivors of the aging Mapogo Coalition.
Just a few days ago the Mapogo Males showed us that they still had it in them to kill a very large buffalo. They fed on this for three days. We hope that this big feed will provide them with the reserves to forge ahead and try squeeze out a piece of land to make a living in this warzone.

I have never seen lion dynamics this chaotic, yet exciting. The reality is that the Mapogo are being chased in all directions; being hit by force on all fronts. I hope it is not the case but these may just turn out to be some of the last images of the mighty old male of the Mapogo, known affectionately as Makhulu “The Big One”. As of yesterday we know that these two Mapogo Males were still alive as they have been feeding on a giraffe carcass in a near in-penetrable drainage line.
We will follow this story with intrigue and will keep you posted as stories and encounters arise.
