From Mala Mala, Highlights of the week:

September 26th: The Eyrefield pride is still feeding off their buffalo kill and they’ve been joined by both Matshapiri males.

September 30th: The Matshapiri males were found south of Rattray’s Camp- they’d been involved in a ‘roaring match’ with what sounded like 2 other males to their north- probably the Clarendon males.

October 3rd: The Matshapiri males provided us with an adrenaline pumping sighting as they attempted to catch a young hippo in the presence of its mother.

About the encounter of the Scar Nose male with the Bike...

LION & LEOPARD FACE OFF: By Latest Sightings - Kruger.

This is the intense moment caught on film of a bold lion sneaking up on an unsuspecting leopard having a nap.

“By far the rarest sighting in my guiding career!” Matthew told us.

Matthew continued: “On October 04th 2016, we had started our game drive in search of leopard.

After hearing a male leopard had been found we all got excited and headed into the area.

The male leopard started to walk along the banks of the Sand river scent marking all the way.  It was at this moment we noticed the male lion lying in the river on the opposite bank.

I said to my guests 'Can you imagine if these 2 dominant males came together'. It seemed as if my words weren’t cold because shortly after that the male leopard went to sleep and the lion started to stalk him from the other side of the river.”

Matthew stated that he had mixed emotions as this sighting started to unfold.

There was a lot of excitement and nerves building as the male lion started to stalk from across the Sand River.

As the lion got closer to the leopard, Matthew realized that if he caught the leopard, then he would potentially kill it. “At this point I started to warn my guests about what could happen.” But, before they knew it, the lion was right below the sleeping leopard!

Fortunately, the lion didn’t kill the leopard, but the sneaky lion scared the living daylights out of the leopard.

“The lion drove the leopard into a Leadwood tree on the river bank and then had a drink and moved off out of the area”.

@Majingilane:

About #67: awesome !!! I nevertheless believe that lions are very careful about the ultra-fast leopard's reactions. Of course that doesn't change anything as concerns the outcome of a potential fight between them, but lions seem to know that leopards are perhaps able to react "all claws outside" even more swifter than them...

Anyway, only an impression...

I think leopards are capable enough to force a lion to think before he attacks, in a scenerio like that a lion needs to time his attack or else he could risk injury.

RE: The Matshapiri Males - Pantherinae - 10-20-2016

The thing that saves the leopard is that he doesn't run straight away, but is caught by surprise and so close that he has no other choice, the lion seems to be surprised and stops. Also the it could be that the lion weren't too determined to kill him either looking at the lions chase, that could be the case after compareing this incident to a male going after a hyena.

RE: The Matshapiri Males - lioncrazy - 10-21-2016

It seems so, at least I haven't seen any indication of the contrary.

Mala Mala is not a reserve to post many pics like others, os that makes it a bit more difficult to know, but the males are excellent fathers and the lionesses of both prides the same, so food won't be the problem.
