That largest male wasnt killed by Kambulas, as he was seen later on with Styx's, all scared over his back.

I didn’t mean the “Largest’.  But a ‘larger’ boy.

Following up on trees filled with vultures, the Styx Pride were found feeding on a buffalo while some hyena hung around for scraps.

The Styx Pride have gone through a tough couple of weeks, so it was great to see the pride all well fed. There were two adult females present accompanied by eight cubs.

Were the other cubs also seen?

I’m afraid to say that this now makes three separate reported sightings using 8 cubs as the number accounted for.   So I venture to think three haven’t been seen.

Well, it is very unfortunate if more sighting of Styx pride with 8 cubs, we can assume 3 have died now. Before this they still defied the odds and kept all 11 alive for a long time.

RE: Styx Pride - criollo2mil - 10-11-2022

“ The Styx Pride have going through a difficult time;

After the Nzengha Males abandoned them in search of new territory and females, the Styx (3 adult females and 11 cubs) were left defensless and have come into many conflicts with other prides and coalitions.

This video was taken the day after a violent altercation with the Kambula Pride, in which the three young male Styx and an older female were separated from the Pride.

In the last few months, two of the young Styx males have been killed by the Gijima males (who have inserted themselves into the Nzengha's old territory). An older lioness and some of the female cubs are also unaccounted for.

It is hoped that the remaining female cubs will come of age soon, and be protected by their age by any threat of overtaking males. “

Are the broad dates for the loss of each cub and the old lioness known?

My notes :
  • 20 Aug - ranger says last time he’s saw eldest lioness and she didn’t look good
  • 1 Sep - Kambula Incident w Styx
  • 3 Sep - I get message that Gijimas killed a male
  • 5 sep - first report I see of only 2 Adults and 8 cubs seen
  • 19 Sep - Lion Sands post giving false hope cause it said all 11 cubs present.  After further analysis, it seems it was either re-post or using old sightings
  • 6 Oct - sightings again reflect 2 Adults; 8 Cubs accounted for

The floppy eared Styx boy.  I believe he’s one of the oldest Males left, son of the Roller Coaster Lioness that is missing.

If you look at him, he has a very asymmetrical face.    Not only a floppy left ear, but also a lazy / darker left eye.

Did someone figure out which cub was born to who? I thought two lionesses gave birth at the same time

I don’t have definitive links of the two older litters….. here are some of my notes.

The STYX PRIDE - Sabi Sabi Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve

The Styx Pride too have been extremely successful over the past week and every time we find them, they look as though they have all had a good meal as they did again this morning, not far from Little Bush Camp. The pride is looking healthy again and it is possibly time to accept that the pride now consists of ten members. There is very little pressure from other lions in the centre to the West of our reserve and we are hoping they finally settle in this area which has a very high density of plains game.
