Btw, what event caused the formation of the Kambula pride? Why did the lionesses go off on their own?

Too big of a pride and new generation of cubs where starting to be born, something similar is happening now in Kambula pride aswell, which will lead to forming another breakeaway pride. .

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Duco Ndona - 07-13-2021

When there are too many lionesses hunting a single wildebeast. There is too little meat to go around.
So a group of lionesses may decide that they are better of hunting without the rest so they get more meat. So if they are succesfull they see less and less reason to join up with the main pride again. The bonds slowly colder and once cubs are born. There no longer is any trust etcetera.

Yea not good news, it seems they lost another small cub since the last time they where seen, and i think its obiviously now that other cubs are not with other lioness..

Losing cubs will put females back into estrus, and they will seek males for mating, that might be danger for that older cub, who has the best chances to survive..

Idk what it is with Mhanghenis, but since OM was with them they lost so many cubs (and we all know Mhangeni 12 story even before) its almost unbelievable, and i dont think OM's demise was the reason why they lost these recent cubs also.. I think females are just too careless..

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Cath2020 - 07-13-2021

I read that they are too often wandering around, always on the move, so you can imagine the little cubs have a hard time keeping up! I don't think it's just the males that are killing them, no, it's mostly that they ultimately get carelessly left behind.  The main culprits are the lead lionesses themselves. Their entire first generation survived only thanks to 4 males that were in their prime, protecting the area.  Now, we can see how they try to raise cubs on their own, and they are sorely lacking...  Even with the OM, they seemed restless when he was gone.  He was the only male, so no lion could stay behind to protect the cubs while he went off patrolling.

Are there still cubs alive from the daughter of the Majingelanes? Their third generation cub was only Tinya, she should be approaching breeding age later this year I'm thinking.... Wasn't she born early or mid 2018?

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Duco Ndona - 07-13-2021

Lions move around a lot. They have to keep up with the herds and avoid hyenas or other lions.
Cubs are expected to keep or catch up as the pride can not put itself at risk just to help one of them. Its how it goes for lions.

The Mhangeni are kind of in a bad spot that's well traversed by nomadic lions and borders a lot of rival groups. They already lost a lot of the cubs to an attack of the Nwas earlier this year. During which they had little choice than to flee and hope the cubs kept up.
The Othawa male already wasn't a good defence for the pride to begin with and now he is gone, their territory is swarmed by new coalitions and prides making things even harder.
So I don't think that their loss of cubs is that surprising. Especially considering cubs in general have a mortality rate of 80% or so.

I think its mostly that people are trying to push a narrative on that pride of being cold hearted bad mothers. But I don't really see them doing anything much different from other prides. And all things considered they must be doing something right seeing they in numbers are one of the larger prides in Sabi Sands.

With some luck, the surviving cubs are all female and now have a better chance. Now the pride can focus on them instead of the much younger and inexperienced ones.
There was a report of one of them having a new litter though?

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - lionuk - 07-13-2021

That's really sad about the cubs, does that mean the cub that was born in January didn't survive? Mhangeni Pride has only one cub from previous coalition that has managed to survive beyond 2 years old and that is Tinya. Let's hope that oldest cub, a female, of Othawa Male can emulate that and keep Mhangeni Pride from diminishing in the future.

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Tonpa - 07-13-2021

Yeah really not looking for the remaining cubs...

yes, but for now the Mohawk won't let him get close to them, maybe later if the two Northern Avocas can't defeat the BBoys, the Mohawk will turn to Dark Mane.

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Duco Ndona - 07-14-2021

Fallouts like these usually don't happen overnight.
But yeah, if things stay the way they are, he is definitely on the way out.
Eventually he wont be seen as anything other than another rival male and the Talamati would be wise not to trust him to defend them from his brothers.

Functually the two are pretty much already operating as two separate coalitions anyway.

Agree with @Duco Ndona, last time DM and his brothers operated as coalition was late 2019, which is quite a long time in lions worlds, they might not be rivals, but they definitely are not operating as coalition anymore..

Dont know what future holds, but until both gruops are dominant i dont see them reunite anytime soon, althrough death of Mohawk or Blondie might force the left male to reunite with DM, probably only scenario for the reunion sadly..
