RE: Leopard Predation Thread - Pckts - 05-17-2019 safari_emz When a Leopard and a hyena share a kill! A heavily pregnant female waterbuck was brought down by our big resident male leopard. He shared his large meal with this hyena until another one arrived and finally scared him off...but not before he managed to steal the foetus and stash it in a nearby tree ? what an incredible sighting!! Video will be coming.... RE: Leopard Predation Thread - Shadow - 05-17-2019 (05-17-2019, 12:50 AM)Pckts Wrote: Interesting incident and that last photo of leopard is superb! RE: Leopard Predation Thread - Pckts - 05-18-2019 robynprestonnz The power of this young leopard pulling the reedbuck out of the water was simply amazing. The reedbuck, at this stage , was incapacitated but not yet dead as the leopard could not get a stranglehold on the throat. The leopard pulled the total "dead" weight of the reedbuck backwards and up the rise where it thereby managed to kill it. msk816 Standing Guard - leopard sits behind the kudu he had killed before our arrival RE: Leopard Predation Thread - sanjay - 05-18-2019 The tough Honey Badger Rescues Her Little one from Leopard deadly grip RE: Leopard Predation Thread - Styx38 - 05-19-2019 Scott, a 37 kg Cape Leopard, kills a porcupine *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author The remains of the porcupine, including quills and leopard scat: *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author https://capeleopard.org.za/research/current/boland/news/story/a-prickly-affair RE: Leopard Predation Thread - Apollo - 05-19-2019 Leopard tries to drag a huge Sambar stag in Bandipur. RE: Leopard Predation Thread - Styx38 - 05-19-2019 Leopard with elephant calf kill: *This image is copyright of its original author A more surprising example of elephant predation that Tim witnessed in Chobe involved a leopard. The elephant calf must have been succumbing to the overbearing drought to give this opportunistic hunter a chance to make its kill. According to a guide at Chobe adult leopards can easily kill elephant calves during the dry season. Such hunts are typically shrouded by the dark of night which gives the predator an additional advantage over the poor sighted elephant. https://www.timplowden.co.uk/matter-life-death/ RE: Leopard Predation Thread - Pckts - 05-21-2019 Leopard w/it's Hartebeest Kill *This image is copyright of its original author

That's believable if you read a bit about leopards. Quote:The scientists found that leopards tend to hoist prey that are between half and one-and-a-half times their own weight. http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20170420-leopards-often-eat-their-lunch-sitting-in-trees-heres-why So let's say a leopard is 70 kg. This could mean that they may lift at max 105 kg (1.5 x 70 kg), so it may not be uncommon for a 70+ kg Leopard to hoist a 100 kg giraffe calf carcass. Anyway, here are leopards hoisting kills in completely different environments: Sri Lanka *This image is copyright of its original author Siberia *This image is copyright of its original author Posted here: https://wildfact.com/forum/topic-leopard-directory?page=7 Since a Leopard can hoist kills in savannas, rain forests, tropical deciduous forests and even coniferous forests bordering taiga, it is obvious that their ancestor passed down this unique trait to help them survive among various competitors. |
