RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Alex Morala - 08-24-2020 Update Othawa Pride and Matimba Male Othawa pride were seen on a kill in singita without the Matimba Male. The rangers found the Matimba Male close to Inyati yesterday. He missed the meal Missing such a meal can be costly for him. Since a pride averages a kill every 3/4 days. Missing it potentially means he goes for a week without a meal. We have seen how his condition quickly deteriorates when he doesn't eat for a while. And Missing back to back meals wouldn't be easy on such a old Male Lion. Othawa Male (Nguvu) is facing similar odds because he's a single pride male in the Sabi Sands, a region crawling with young male coalitions Othawa youngsters are 2 yrs old now, so with Junior, they can pretty much survive on their own already, or will be able in few months (lions can survive on their own at the age over 2 to 2.5 yrs old, which is Junior age now, and chances get higher if the number of individuals is higher, in this case they are 4).. So yea i disagree, HB pretty much suceeded in raising those youngsters to indenpendece, now is all on them.. RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Cath2020 - 08-24-2020 Well, it's not a guarantee in Sabi Sands.... Apparently, many youngsters there need more time since even the Mangheni 12 didn't make it. Weren't they around 2 years old when they were ousted? B. Boy was definitely over 2 and the others were just about that age, maybe give or take 1-2 months. Even with all 12 supporting each other, just about every single one died except for a female that was reluctantly accepted back into the pride months later. Initially, I was shocked....but then I checked their ages and they weren't all terribly young, but probably not the ideal age to be on their own yet....but still, you'd think at least a few of the males would have made it, helping each other out. Perhaps they had other issues going on besides being rather young to suddenly become nomads. Problem with Mhanghenis was that they got mange, they where doing just fine for almost half a year before they got mange, after they got mange they died of in a span of few months.. I didnt say its guarantee that they will survive.. Theres many other factors besides hunting and feeding, like danger from other lions, hyenas etc.. And definitely its not ideal age to be left alone, but im just saying that lions at that age can hunt and feed themself.. RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Potato - 08-24-2020 I think Mhangenis were 1,5-2 years old when they started their nomadic life so they were not ready yet for it. Two and half years old is optimal for starting nomadic life, but best would be 3 years old or older. Also other think is that I do not think death of HB would really change much for Othawa youngsters. They wouldn't need to leave the pride. Maybe a litter or two was slightly younger than 2. Big Boy and his sisters were born in Dec. of 2015, the rest of them a few months later or so. The Majingilanes died out Feb/March of 2018; the sub-adults were sent into exile early 2018 at around a similar time frame. RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Potato - 08-24-2020 Yup oldes litter was slightly older than two years as Mhangeni subs went nomadic in February 2018 I think, but many subs weren't even 2 by that time. It seems that these are 2 older and 1 younger lioness, i wonder if those lionesses are coming to estrus and are now avoiding the young males and searching for mating partners.. It would be perfect if they can find N'ws males now without young males around, they are not that far away from each others..
