Hope his fatherly instincts kick in now. He needs to roar regularly and establish a territorial boundary which is lacking at the moment.

Remember, Othawa male is only 5.5 yrs old and he is already dominant for almost 2 yrs, which is crazy..lack of inexperience showed as his first litter was lost and he was having hard time to obtain Mhangeni pride who was acting quite semi nomadic at times (thats prob the reason why they lost those cubs). 

But he is coming into prime years now and will prob start acting more dominant and territorial, but keeping low profile as a lone male isnt that bad of a thing, it worked well so far for him.. 

Its hard to predict future, but if currently those 3 unknown males move on and leave him alone, I think he has a window of 2 yrs to raise his litter, in 2 years he will have trouble to obtain 3 Othawa young males and 6 Kambula young males, those youngsters are on his doorstep and will prob target a lone male like him..

He's surrounded on all sides by coalitions bigger than him. The only place he can run is west and and the three nomads are encroaching on HB's border there.  Unless he gets a partner it's going to be tough few years.

He does. He is established as dominant male for 2 years or so already. He of course keep on marking territorry and roar.

Has there been any really successful single males in ss/kruger, in other words does the othawa male stand a chance of raising his young and keeping a pride long term?

Black Dam male has successfully raised a generation of cubs and I believe the Giraffe male currently in charge of Black Dam pride has also been quite successful. Big Boy Charleston has also been on his own for a while and still controls a pride and his cubs are reaching maturity. So there are some examples but the lion has to be resourceful with a good dose of luck on his side.

That depends from what competition he will encounter. He stand no chance if some coalition challange him, but if he will be lucky and won't be challanged by any coalition like for example Giraffe male in Thorynbush he can raise generation of his cubs to adulthood.

Yea, as @Matimbalani pointed out, there is few example of lone males that has been successfull for 2/3 years to raise their offspring, but eventually they will get detroned by bigger coalitions, BDM has lost his territory just recently, and Xikukutsus with Mapoza are putting pressure on Giraffe male and its only matter of time when they wil dethrone him.

Big Boy is only 1 year or so lone male. 

Its possible but they need a bit of luck aswell as good territory position, for instance Giraffe male territory is fenced by 3 sides, HB and Othawas territory as well fenced by 3 sides, Big Boys territory fenced by 2 sides etc,

All those fences prevent other nomadic males to enter from those sides, unlike for instances Bboys territory where nomadic males can enter from all sides, i find that territory to be impossible to defend by only 1 male for 2/3 years.. 

Great current example is Hamiltons pride male, he is dominant for around 1 year and already has problems, as 2 nomadic males enter his territory from north and are currently causing troubles..

Giraffe males territory is fenced by 3 sides, thats a huge advantage, its bassicly reduces chances of nomadic males enter his territory by 3..

Western sector has that advantage too..

OM is one of my favorite living males, I really do hope he remains in place for awhile. He is so young, and had been dominant for awhile, considering his age. So far, I'd say he has had some good luck, and made some solid decisions, I hope it continues for awhile still.

Tbh the Mhangeni pride is a bit of a trap for him, its safe but he might become another Solo. He needs to become nomadic so he can find a few partners, then try to get a territory he can actually defend with his gang. If he stays a dominant male he won't let another male join him, which leaves him very vulnerable.

Lions are animals afterall, they are not capable of logical thinking like we do, they mostly operate on instincts..

Theres no example of lion purposely leaving his pride to become nomadic so he can find partners, this is not a movie..
