LLANOS: Totin is captured making a vocalization to localize her cub Lulu

RE: Jaguar Directory - Balam - 07-23-2020

Onçafari recently released a new documentary where they showed some unreleased footage of Fantasma, they clarified there that Fantasma was never captured

Ãgue is very pretty, she's my second favorite female from PJ after Hunter/Capi (my old avi). She's also either a reasonably big female, or Ousado is a younger male with a smaller frame, they look very similar in size.

I saw Hunter, she's massive and gorgeous.

Paulo Barreiros

Hunter is the largest female Jaguar around here. She’s the granddaughter of the legendary Ruth, which is the most important (Jaguar) matriarch in the Meeting of the Waters State Park, Northern Pantanal.

After losing her first and only cub (when he was nearly independent), this year she had cubs again. Good luck Hunter

RE: Jaguar Directory - Balam - 08-01-2020

@Dark Jaguar after revisiting the documentary in English I realized that they did mention the name of this jaguar. He is Yvo son of Teorema:

In that same documentary, there was footage of Teorema fighting with Fantasma, probably during mating, so I wouldn't be surprised if Yvo is Fantasma's son as well. He was never captured.

RE: Jaguar Directory - Dark Jaguar - 08-01-2020

@Balam

Thanks for finding out, Oh yeah that's it he is Yvo but are you sure he is Teorema's cub?? I didn't have time to watch the documentary yet but I recall him being the eldest cub of Yara female ( a very old female, so old I heard she was also captured by Leandro Silveira when he used to capture pantanal jaguars too in the 2000's ), Teorema the one you mentioned was the mother of Nusa female and a few others but yeah Yvo could be Fantasma ( ghost ) offspring.

Back to Yvo now I see he's a bit grown on that footage probably one of the last times he was seen, he's the same cub I posted the one who got an ugly throat bite and managed to survive with two deep holes on his neck perforated by canines possibly by some adult male already pushing him away from the area as the author of the pics also had the same thought.

Anyways it was an Impressive feat of durability of jaguars though specially as a cub considering jaguars are cats who bite way too hard with tremendous bite force.

In the documentary they mentioned him as Teorema's son if my memory isn't failing, I'll confirm again later today. He looked great in that footage!

CHACO: I'm gonna do a summary of a recent article posted by Mongabay on the dynamics of the only jaguar captured and monitored in the Argentinian Chaco so far, Qaramta 107 kg male.

Qaramta has been tracked for 10 months now, at first on the 14 of September of 2019 a camera trap installed at the offshore of a river where the tracks of Qarampta had been found and it captured this images:

His sighting was huge because it is estimated that only between 15 and 20 specimens live between the Paraguayan and Argentinian Chaco. This is a very sensitive population.

Qaramta was described as a very "Chacoan" of big size as are the individuals in that area (historically Chaco jaguars have always been some of the biggest). Unfortunately, no sightings of any females had been recorded in the same area where Qaram had been spotted, so in order to keep him inside the national park, the team of zoologists had to bring a captive female of 19 years of age from the Reintroduction Center of the Rewilding Argentina foundation, her name is Tobuna.

While Tobuna had been kept inside an enclosure designed for her and Qram to interact, the biologists had the purpose of increasing the gene pool inside the park and due to her old age, she was ruled out in that project. So instead they brought in a different and younger female named Tania who is one of Tobuna's daughters and she replaced her mother.

Tania:

Interactions between the two:

Rumble between the two:

Using Tania as a tool to keep Qaramta inside the park has worked so far, he stays around her especially during the times of heat, then wanders around other areas of the park. Unfortunately outside of it, he runs the risk of being poached as hunting is still an issue in that region.

I'm not sure if the team plans to provide Qaramta access to Tania, but it makes sense that at some point they would in order to increase the presence of Chacho jaguars in the park and allow him to pass down his genes.

The team is torn between building a different sanctuary for Tania in which they would allow Qaramta to enter due to COVID-19 precautions. If the plans goes through, they would allow them to mate and retain Tania in captivity while pregnant.

The good news is that they have spotted the tracks of two other jaguars in the park, one measures 5 cm in width, the other measures 10 cm in width (and might be the same one I posted some time ago with a length of close to 15 cm)

IOP

Cerrado jaguars with cattle kills in farms.

Note just like some collared individuals in the video captured by IOP there's a big Cerrado male with collar at 2:24min. I wonder how heavy he was.

I'm just seeing this but that jaguar you mentioned in the video appears to be the same one as the one in the picture below. Needless to say, he's huge, looks just as big as a hefty Pantanal male wow. I'm so annoyed at IOP for not releasing his weight, I'd put him in the same category looks wise as Caricare Llanos male, so I'm guessing he would also be around 120 kg in weight. Cattle really does bring up the size potential of jaguars.

@Balam  How did you answer my post from the predation thread here??  Confused

Yes the Cerrado jaguar on the pic I left bellow the video is the same one I mentioned, I posted that photo on purpose hahaha. he was a massive cerrado male probably on Tiago's level or even above and IOP captured him back in 2014 and chances are we'll never get to even know the name of this animal, let alone its size.

Cerrado jaguars reaching 120 kg isn't a surprise for me and I believe neither for any of us here, since the largest cerrado male we know of is an unknown male who reached 118 kg so I believe cerrado jaguars aren't just able to reach 120 kg but also able to surpass it in my opinion and yes they indeed rival Pantanal and Llanos jags in size as you mentioned.

And after seeing many large cerrado jaguars in the northern section I am starting to think these animals from Cerrado average size is really 100 kg, they're really underrated around here.

I gotta agree with you and I am very frustrated with IOP, only God knows the tons of messages ( including private ones ) I already left for them and getting just nothing.

Yesterday they dropped a map on where Ariane cerrado female have been the last months with her pic along with Annah ( I think you may have already seen it ) and by no means they revealed Ariane's size.

I recall something @Rishi said in the tiger weight measurements thread which I completely agree with ''Even today, even amongst scientific community. The size is least of their concerns.''

For our unhappiness Its very true.

Overlap in territory and territory expansion and knowing where these animals walk is much more important than sizes here in Brazil ( not saying its not important by no means at all ). and that's what we get from IOP every once in a while a publish on Collar map on where cerrado jaguars have been to, but its not what we really want.

And many other jaguars studies published in Brazil too, I've seen studies with jaguars captured in Amazon, Atlantic Forest including areas they surpass 100 kg, they launch all data possible in the study with tables of jaguars/Pumas captured of even more than 10 individuals except the basic data ( the weight ) its horribly incredible.

In the past whenever I ran into jaguars studies I was always amazed to get to see it in order to find out the sizes of the individuals captured for the study but after many frustrations I don't get that much excited seeing a study anymore, chances of sizes reveals are very scarce and I am talking about cases where the animals are really captured and completely verified.

It is important to study all the aspects of the animals that's great, but not unveiling the basic data ( the weight ) it literally won't give us ( readers ) a clue on how well conserved the enrviornment these animals are living in is specially on prey base which the weight of the animal will give a clue.

What frustrates me the most is that I am dying to know more on Cerrado jags sizes but we just don't get it, I even trying to get in contact with someone inside IOP but I think the person doesn't have social medias hahaha. So we're back to square zero again.

And just to let you know in case IOP manages to capture the misterious Big Cerrado male jaguar, don't get too excited because they won't reveal his weight and in case this capture happens I will quickly try to get in contact with Jorge and Gediendson to get his weight and lets hope they both will participate of the capture because both Jorge and Gediendson already told me they don't know Rogério cerrado male size cause they weren't there in cerrado the day of Rogério's capture.

I am also trying to get in contact with NEX Institution to get the measurements of 110 kg Xangô Cerrado male but with no responses, I also messaged Maite ( she measures the wild jags on Onças do Rio Negro team and Reprocon too ) to get the measurements of 130 kg Sossego and 134 kg Matheus/Manco, she already saw my message 2 weeks ago but she didn't answer it.

Onçafari who monitores Maned Wolves in Cerrado now has just unveiled the first capture of a Cerrado jaguar, a female named Lua ( moon ) from Pousada Trijunção but as you can see in the official publishment there is no weight statement  Funny .

RE: Jaguar Directory - Balam - 08-06-2020

AMAZON: "This was the only record of this mysterious male Jaguar. He passed by my two camera traps in the same evening in May, and never again. With him, it's three male Jaguars spotted in the same area of the reserve within less than a year. Cool stuff!"

"I miss this kitty. This was the last capture of the male Igarapé by my camera trap. It's so exciting to set a camera trap somewhere and get a record of such a beautiful and mighty creature passing by some time later..."

"Another great record of the male Igarapé (Panthera onca) patrolling his area. Was he smelling a potential prey?"
