''The trunk is in fact an extension of the nose and upper lips. They use it to pick branches and fruit when they are eating, they also use it to smell. The tapirs are crepuscular although we see them at different times. They seem to be territorial and use similar areas to eat and often the same paths to reach them.''

''Tapirs are excellent swimmers and often sink and walk into the bottom of lakes and ponds. This allows them to eat aquatic plants. On warm days it is common to find them refreshing in these natural "pools". We believe that like many animals in Africa they also roll in the mud in order to avoid ticks and other insects.
They have 4 fingers on their front paws and 3 on their back paws which helps them to walk in the mud and on sandy soils.
There are four species of tapirs - all vulnerable or endangered mainly due to hunting and habitat loss. The species we find here at the Ecological Refuge Caiman (South Pantanal) is the common tapir.''

''In the sources I researched it is stated that tapirs are solitary animals but that they form couples in the breeding season. I've been having photographic traps in this place for 7 months and I always register this pair of adult tapirs passing by. I found it interesting they walk together for so long and also observe that most of the times the female follows the male. I believe that maybe there is a strong social link there, maybe protection or knowledge sharing of the places with fruit trees, which are seasonal. Coexistence that can go far beyond the reproductive link.''
