RE: Spotted hyena ( crocuta crocuta) - Pantherinae - 09-24-2014 Okey enough about that pckts,,, Nothing here can be called selective posting... I asumed that The hyena was a cub... And aswell I said a groupe attacked.., and I posted The link where You could read The storry yourself.. Aswell as leopards are my favorite animal aswell like them way more than hyenas! And let stuff like that pass.. And stay on topic, because all seems to Get pissed at us when we do that. RE: Spotted hyena ( crocuta crocuta) - Pckts - 09-24-2014 Like I said, it never said anything about it being a cub but you did. Since we have had debates on leopards dominance compared to Hyena, I assumed that was attributed to it. If it was not the case, then I'm sorry. But it seemed that way to me. There are some famous accounts, like the XIXth century famous explorer of Africa David Livingstone's one (1813-1873), who was brutaly attacked and caught by a lion and testifyed to "have been shook like a rat by a terrier dog". The pain occured after the attack, not during. So, this is perhaps the case as concerns the preys... For those not familiar with this strange and shaggy-looking member of the hyena family, you're looking at Hyaena brunnea – a.k.a the brown hyena. And on its menu here is a choice piece of cheetah carcass. These elusive, nocturnal carnivores are the rarest members of the hyena family. They're also scavenging experts, covering large distances during solitary nightly excursions to sniff out carcasses using their exceptional sense of smell. This particular snack was probably obtained in just that way. "In all likelihood, the cheetah was killed by another large predator (a lion or leopard) and then eaten by this brown hyena," says Vincent van der Merwe, who is the cheetah metapopulation coordinator for the Carnivore Conservation Programme with South African environmental organisation Endangered Wildlife Trust." "But van der Merwe rules out the possibility that the brown hyena could have attacked and killed the cheetah on its own. "Brown hyenas regularly chase cheetahs off their kills but I don’t know of a single incident where a brown hyena has actually killed an adult cheetah. However, it is well known that brown hyenas are responsible for a considerable proportion of cheetah cub mortalities," he adds." http://www.earthtouchnews.com/natural-world/predator-vs-prey/guess-what-this-brown-hyena-had-for-dinner RE: Spotted hyena ( crocuta crocuta) - GuateGojira - 11-05-2015 (11-05-2015, 11:33 PM)Pantherinae Wrote: @GuateGojira do You have The weight's for South African Spotted hyenas aswell females there are said to average 68 kg, while Zambian females 70 kg! The measurements and weights that I posted are from South Africa, specifically Kruger NP. They also add some weights from East Africa for comparison. Take in count that the weights of hyenas, just like those of the great cats, should be adjusted for stomach content, which means that some of those large hyenas could had some stomach content, after all. RE: Spotted hyena ( crocuta crocuta) - Pantherinae - 11-06-2015 Woops my bad! Still those hyenas are big femals average 69.2 kg in Kruger! Thanks For sharing, spotted hyenas are really cool animals I do admire and respect them so much!
