Beverly Joubert: " For elephants to thrive, they need vast tracts of protected land in which to forage and roam. Herds can sometimes consist of several family groups and may number well over 50 individuals. Lots of elephants require lots of food and water, so it’s vital that large enough areas of land are preserved for these giants to flourish.
This #WorldEnvironmentDay is unlike any other. As we continue to struggle in the face of a growing pandemic, we are reminded more than ever that our relationship with nature is fragile and that it must be nurtured if we hope to have a future.

A big image from 2019 - perhaps up there in my elephant work over the last 10 years. We will get back there in 2020 - I have no doubt, but maybe not until the autumn. East Africa is not a good news story right now.
In the meantime, we think, we learn and we process. We will all comeback stronger from these dark days. "

Beverly Joubert: " Today we celebrate fathers everywhere and the vital role they play in the lives of their families. Although elephant societies are matriarchal, the influence of experienced bulls is essential to a healthy herd. Younger males learn much of their behaviour from their elders, and in situations where mature bulls have been removed by poaching or legal hunting, herds are disrupted and youngsters can become excessively aggressive or fail to mate successfully as a result of a lack of guidance from older males. Without fathers around, elephant society is turned upside down.
