RE: Jaguar Directory - Balam - 03-11-2021 SOUTHERN PANTANAL This month's camera trap footage at Da Ilha, I'm very happy with Onçafari's providing us with this nice footage monthly. *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author By Onçafari RE: Jaguar Directory - Balam - 03-12-2021 Sandro We've got footage from NatGeo from his capture, turns out Sandro was not baited, nor was he full belied as initially believed before being captured on the snare if we go by the shown footage of the capture of the female. The official weight of 130 kg is mentioned twice throughout the video, including by Gediendson himself. Not only was Sandro not full-bellied prior to being snared, but it took the team several hours to get to him after his capture, in the event he had any stomach content, such content would have been quickly assimilated into the body as big cats have a very fast metabolism. It seems like Sandro was laid with his upper body where several organs are located inclined on higher ground which gave him the appearance of having a fuller belly. Not saying he was empty just not gorged. In the first part of the video it is mentioned that he weighed "around" 130 kg, since Gustavo Fonseca told us he weighed more than 130 kg, I believe I stand correct in that the 130 kg value was adjusted as an estimate minus the stomach content he may have had. This footage is also really good because it tells us that contrary to popular belief, when captured with snares jaguars do not gorge on the bait used to lure them into the snare, the stress they have after being captured would keep them from being interested in the meat, this is why deducting weight off of the official weight given based on the amount of meat put on the snare is not an accurate way of arriving at an "empty-bellied" weight. As in the case with Lopez, we do not know if he ate the 3-4 kg of fish put in his bait before being captured, not to mention the assimilation process into the body I described before for any other stomach content the jaguar may have had prior to being snared, which would assimilate into the body in the hours that take the biologists to approach to tranquilize it and take measurements: *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author Credits to NatGeo RE: Jaguar Directory - Balam - 03-16-2021 NORTHERN PANTANAL Good news from the Pantanal! Always great to find a pregnant jaguar. We expect to be able to offer trips here later this year. *This image is copyright of its original author Focus Nature Tours RE: Jaguar Directory - Balam - 03-18-2021 SOUTHERN PANTANAL Male seen at Fazenda San Fracisco, September 2020 *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author By Larissa C RE: Jaguar Directory - Balam - 03-21-2021 Forasteiro September 2020 *This image is copyright of its original author Marcelo de Sousa RE: Jaguar Directory - Balam - 03-21-2021 Balam I can only imagine what the fight between him and Forasteiro must've looked like Circa September/October 2020 *This image is copyright of its original author Flávio Navarro *This image is copyright of its original author Abbie Martin *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author Edu Arruda Neto *This image is copyright of its original author Jorge Ap. Easily recognizable because of an upper left lip injury, Geoff can be seen in a variety of youtube videos catching or attempting to catch prey. This jaguar kill, death, and drag took less than 11 minutes. Because those overhanging vines hindered the cat from quickly hiding its prey in thick vegetation, as jaguars typically do, all of us in nearby boats had the privilege of time to observe. Two observations that surprised me were how long the jaguar could hold its breath underwater during the fight. I could see parts of both species above the surface, but not the jaguar head for what seemed like ages. The second observation showed the amazing strength to hoist the carcass up a steep embankment then to drag the carcass up the hill with only the right side of its mouth! Jaguars have the strongest bite of any cat and many references state it kills with one bite at the base of the neck. But after searching many articles, youtube videos, and my on-site observation, it may also use asphyxiation. According to our fantastic Brazilian guide, Paulo Boute, who’s led tours for 35 years in Brazil, this attack was the first instance of a caiman kill in the river for both species. Spectacular!" *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author Hopkins (Vaikue)Being enticed by a female, likely Ti *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author Hero*This image is copyright of its original author Cherie Pittillo RE: Jaguar Directory - Roflcopters - 03-25-2021 that’s a massive jaguar ! tfs RE: Jaguar Directory - Balam - 03-26-2021 NORTHERN PANTANAL Donal Profile: *This image is copyright of its original author His pictures last year when his paws were burnt due to the local fires, poor baby. He looks huge despite being young (he will be four this year), from the JID they told me he was getting huge, it will be interesting to see how much mass he picks up over the next couple of years. Another shot of the massive male in the making Xingu: "As Santiago of Chile is being confined again, I continued to have a look with my last February 2021 jaguar pictures from Porto Jofre, Pantanal. Here is young male Xingu again located on a narro strip of land surrounded by the river in the foreground and the flooded fields in the background. He clearly is a future dominant male from the Upper Tres Irmaos river. So Xingu has literally been compared to three of the largest males in the area already including Edno, needless to say he's on his way to likely becoming one of the biggest jaguars seen. He also noted how calm and friendly Xingu is next to the tourists, this is a good sign because it will allow us to get constant footage and pictures of him. By JGoulevitch |
