Kruger Male seen alone by Nkorho Bush Lodge, seem like he is contact calling for the Southern Avoca.

So stoked these two guys found each other and are a great match. Their bond is pretty strong….too bad there’s no available prides but curious how well they can battle for a territory. They are old but very experienced fighters and in good condition.

He can use a meal, can see his ribs.

A bit off topic perhaps but I always wonder how these creatures are able to navigate through this terrain. To know where they are, which direction they are going, how they avoid enemies and, in this case, find there partners again after they were separated. Here Kruger male is looking for his partner (after Southern Avoca got chased by PCMs?). Obviously they do it through vocalizing, their smell etc. but as a human I always find it hard to grasp how that works and how they manage to find eachother again. I would get lost there so quicky lol.

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Duco Ndona - 01-21-2025

Lions only regulary use small portions of their territory with some paths connecting these areas together. If they stray from those, they can roughly orient themselves around those spots to get an general sense of where they need to go. With perhaps some navigating around the sun or distant mountains to help them. It helps that the Savanna is very open so finding a big Kopje to lookout from also helps.

If they get seperated, its just a matter of checking those spots while leaving a mark you have just been there. Then if you are close, contact call.

Nomads probably use a similar tactic, but on a much bigger scale and avoiding territorial markings from other coalitions. Though if they are seperated it can take a lot longer to find eachother, so even while fleeing their best tactic is to flee in the same direction or note which way the other went.

That is a Kruger road and with them having come from the Sabi Sands and unless they've gone waaay further south, it could only be the H11 which is the Kruger Gate to Skukuza road that borders the Lion Sands and Kirkmans Camp which is the southernmost Sabi Sands or the H1-2 that goes roughly north east up past and away from the Sabi Sands but comes close to the south eastern corner of it around the Sand River low level bridge/Maroela Loop (S83).

Looking at the other slides, the sun, the water monitor pic at the drainage line of which there aren't really any that look like that on the H11 and the fact that to be on the H11 they'd have to had crossed a full Sabie River somewhere, my money is that they were spotted on the H1-2 just north of the Sand River low level bridge, or just south of it, I suppose, on an early morning drive that was going towards Tshokwane.

To be exact they are seen at S1, 500m from H11, Near Skukuza, information from Kruger Sightings.

Interesting. They've trekked almost due south. That's pretty much smack bang in the N'waswitshaka pride territory then isn't it and his maternal grandmother might still be even be there. Highly dangerous for K12 as a lone female but at this point, where isn't, I guess.

Wonder if we'll ever see them back in the Sabi Sands or if they'll lose themselves in the Kruger.

Majingis had very strong genes, especially DM, many of their descendents look a lot like them.

And unlike say Old Skybeds ( who also have many descendents resembling them ), the Majingi descendents aren't inbred, they resemble Majingi out of the sheer strength of their genes.

3/4 Monwana Boys following the Mangheni Pride. PCM really needs to push them out as a guide mentioned that they believe that the elder Ximunghwe Female had already given birth, if the Monwana Boys is still in West by when Tsalala give birth then the cubs of the Xim female and Tsalala female will be most likely endangered for the Mangheni Pride, could not really tell maybe they would tolerate the cubs of the PCM.

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Duco Ndona - 01-24-2025

The PCmales completely failed to offer any stability to any pride that isn't the Ximhungwe pride.
It wouldn't hurt if a new coalition were to take over the Tsalala, Mangheni and Nkuhuma prides for now. Especially if can be achieved without harming the current litters of cubs. Perhaps these males will do what the Kambulas neglected to do.

The Mhangenis would definitely kill Ximunghe and Tsalala's cubs. No reason they wouldn't. The 4 Monwanas might bring stability to the Mhangenis (they might also end up killing their cubs), but if they establish territory here, and the PC males fail to push them out, or bring down their numbers early on, then in a year or two the PC males' offspring is going to be in real trouble. No way 3 Mhangenis are going to be enough for 4 males.

All that said, it's still early days and the PC males might turn up at any moment and chase them out of the West.

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Tr1x24 - 01-25-2025

PCMs already chased Monwanas off the kill, separating 1 male.

Idk, but im not yet on "Monwanas hype" train, atleast for now, i think they are still some time away from being serious contenders.

These boys still look very young and still have much to develope, especially in size/mass.

I dont think PCMs see them as major threat for now, they are like double the mass of these boys.

RE: Lions of Sabi Sands - Duco Ndona - 01-25-2025

True, but I dont think the PCmales are interested in more than just stealing the occasional kill from them. Provided the youngsters dont push their luck and begin harassing them or the Ximhungwes. And if the Monwhanas realize that the PCmales are not going to seriously chase them. They may just stick around.

So if they decide to settle, they may be there for a while. Perhaps even long enough to fully reach their prime.
