Mapogo Lions Makulu and Mr.T with a young buffalo that they had caught. Stories say that Mr.T was the dominant lion of the coalition in the years after his return to the West but that is not correct, no single lion is dominant in a coalition of equals. Here the third remaining lion, Pretty Boy (not featured), was with the pride whilst these two were feeding. You see no animosity between the two lions despite there being food involved. Mr.T and Makulu were often seen together like this in these twilight years of the coalition and their bond was never stronger.
This archive footage of the Mapogo lions was filmed in 2011 yet never made it onto YouTube except for a few seconds in a Highlights reel.

Rob the ranger used to say that their was no single ultimate dominant male in mapogos. They were equally dominant. But as for those years leopard hills and inyati rangers have different opinion.
By the way i myself believe the dominance in mapogos cant be ranked. Atleast no one was a least dominant

I actually think that claim that every coalition has 1 dominant/leading male for ever is hard exaggerated, just like Rob said.
The most dominant/leading male of coalition is the male who is the strongest/most agressive, confident atm in a coalition,and that can change month to month,day to day.
Makhulu was clearly that in the
early ages when other mapogos where not in his prime yet, and from that time people called him The Leader.
The same can be said for Dark Mane Majingilane, Matimba Ndunha, Bboy Nsuku etc,they where all leaders in early ages because they where the strongest, oldest, biggest. Later on all males in a coalition where "the most dominant" at some point.

Actually according only to Fursan Syed, Mr. T became more dominant. In fact, few years ago he and others started on Facebook an aggressive propaganda for this lion...
Who cares if one of the brothers was somewhat dominant or not? Maybe even he was, for a time... they're gone.

One old article but quite nice one to read and remember, that when talking about legend of Mapogos, it´s about coalition, not 1-2 lions.

I personally find Notch and his sons as the most interesting lions, but these are personal preferences always. And it doesn´t mean, that I wouldn´t be as amazed about Mapogos as anyone else. It was a remarkable coalition, no question about it.

Try to keep it civilized. What comes to postings now, if you guys put here some long quotes, put also link to source file. If that isn´t possible, no point to post something. And don´t post so, that every word is written with capital letters.
This is fair warning, idea is to post good information. Opinions are ok, but have some reasoning if posting those.

Yes, that happens time to time. Well, of course you can post older things when you put reasoning there too. Try to put as much information about sources as possible when no link isn´t there. But please don´t write with too many capital letters, it looks odd.
If there is something to say from others, let´s keep it civilized from now on. Disagreements are inevitable time to time, but that is no excuse to go impolite right away.

RIP Mr.T (The End of the Era)

Love him or hate him the infamous short maned male in the Mapogo coalition earned the respect of his harshest critics this morning. True to his character he fought alone to protect his territory, an ageing lone male against four bristling new…comers. Unfortunately the outcome was inevitable and the death of Mr T all but ends the reign of the Mapogo. He went honorably and for that we salute him. Now we need to accept natures brutality and look forward to new beginnings. It was a privilege to have spent six years with these animals. RIP.

We were honoured to have met Mr.T and his two co-horts this week with their recent kill (Buffalo) – he was a fine looking older male. The ‘Boys from the South’ are also magnificent – nature will have its way. RIP Mr. T.
