"The Southern Pride was tracked down yesterday afternoon to a buffalo kill that one of the females had taken down and this morning, after a cold rainy night, we found them all quite relaxed a short distance from where they had finished off the buffalo."

There is no denying it, these two male lions have a breathtaking effect on their admirers. Two magnificent lions with an incredible bond, handsome dark manes, and a growing family with the Southern Pride females, with whom they have a number of cubs. Little mention needs to be made of one of the males’ dangling canines: this has been a highlight of the Sabi Sand lions’ fan club for almost a year now! Recently we’ve been lucky enough to admire these bushveld warriors as they relaxed on the Umkumbe Safari Lodgetraverse before moving off to meet up with the the Southern Pride.

The story behind the one Charleston’s tooth began nearly a year ago when he was kicked in the jaw by a giraffe during a hunt (bound to do some serious damage), and a subsequent fight with other lions caused the tooth to become completely dislodged. It looks (and probably was) very uncomfortable, but we have assured concerned followers that he is clearly not showing signs of suffering. In fact, it has been said that he looks stronger and in better condition than his coalition partner! The general thinking is that the tooth will finally become detached during feeding or fighting, but so far it has hung in there. He is instantly recognisable and has become a real sensation since the incident, and many people have been of the opinion that this awkward looking injury and the lack of a fourth canine would hinder his ability to thrive as a dominant male lion in his territory, but as always, nature has proved just how adaptable it is!

From Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, A WEEK IN THE BUSH VOL. 122:
"The cubs of the Southern Pride are doing exceptionally well, mainly due to the excellent parenting and survival skills of their parents. The females are hunting very successfully and are keeping the pride well fed. The males are very actively scent marking as well as interacting with the cubs in spectacular displays of fatherhood.
The cubs keep us in stitches with their playful antics and are growing quickly. Altogether, there are 15 in the pride now and it looks as if the Southern Pride is slowly returning to its former glory."

The Charleston Male's have returned to the Kirkman's property after a lengthy absence and have brought down a Cape Buffalo on the Sand River! They may have returned to announce themselves to an unknown male lion who was found close to the Sand River yesterday and was heard roaring last night!

"After playing on a fallen down tree, two of the older Southern Pride cubs got distracted by the antics of their younger siblings who showed great interest in one of the Charleston males and played with dad’s mane!"
