He was seen at Londolozi after that on 6th April.

DM back down south :

RE: Avoca male lions - WildLeonis - 04-14-2022

From the front he looks good. Don’t know how he’s really though since he’s not up so that his full condition can be accessed.  But he’s lost a lot of mane. He almost looks like he did 4 years ago when him and his brothers first arrived on Djuma due to the lost mane.

Good to see he’s still alive though and doesn’t appear to be in dire straights, at this point.

Tbf, majority of males lost a bit of mane atm in Sabi Sands and Kruger (compare pictures now and half a year ago) as its summer season and first few months in the year are some of the hottest , after May/June their manes will start to get thicker and more impressive as it gets colder.

Lion manes are linked to the climate and whether changes (just like in majority of animals with coats).

So im not concermed about a bit of mane loss, as its normal atm.

I hope he settles with some lionesses soon, or better yet, finds a coalition partner to assist him.

Dunno. I think if he had what it took to defend a pride he would have stayed.
Finding some new strength should be his only priority now. Be it through a coalition partner or healing properly.
Otherwise, the only thing he will be doing is wasting some poor lionesses time.

Yea, i dont see him become dominant on his own again, if he finds partners then yea, he is still not too old, he isnt even 9 yrs old, so he should have atleast 2 more strong years ahead, altrough ageing is not the same for all individuals, some start decrease at 9, some at 12.

Wonder what would happen if he bumps into these 3 new males, altrough these newcomers dont look like most friendly males around, but if DM is submissive enough who knows.

You're right. What he is going through right now could be beneficial or not for him.
He is not so old and after been a King in the past, he may use this time of hardship to reset himself and rise up again, or, keep a low profile for the rest of his life.

He is said to be together with 4 females, through females are not too friendly with him. If he is on the trail of Mhangeni pride, there are decent chances he can bump into Nkuhuma/Nhenha. It would be intresting to see what happens in such case - if they would join forces or not. If they would then they would have much better odd in competing for Mhangeni pride.

That'll be awesome if they join forces!!

What a story that would be if they did. A great combination of experience (Nhenha and DM) and youth (Nkuhuma and DM). It would be the best thing to happen for all parties at this point, especially if they compete for the Mhangeni Pride.

On the flip side, however, it might be for the best if the three new males instead takeover the Mhangeni Pride. It would establish much-needed stability for the pride and enhance the genetic diversity of the lions in the Sabi Sands area. For almost a decade, a large majority of males that were territorial in SS came from the north. The SS and Manyeleti regions could really use a dose of new blood (especially Manyeleti).

RE: Avoca male lions - Duco Ndona - 04-15-2022

I dont know. For Nym and Nhenha it would be far more efficient to just kill Darkmane and enjoy a bigger share of the spoils. Its not like they need the numbers to take over the Mhangeni pride.
The thing with the Mhangeni is not that the pride is located in the territory of a rival group. But rather that they still have that cub. Aslong she is alive, they will keep collectively avoiding other male lions.

Though in theory if they stay close enough, they can mate with the females and take their kills just fine and ultimately that's the only thing any male lion wants.
But it will for a long time be a game of cat and mouse. They wont be accepted like we see between other males and prides.

It seems they will have to compete with PC males for that pride so the supperior numbers would be very helpfull.

RE: Avoca male lions - afortich - 04-16-2022

thinking in his longer future, I believe that for NYM could be better if they find a third/fourth confident partner younger than Nhenha  but is unpredictable what will happen in their dynamics. Time will show.
