Lion dynamics continue to enthral us, and as we bid farewell to the Scar-nosed Majingilane male and reflect on the incredible reign that this coalition had, we can’t help but wonder what is in store for the Birmingham Males and what their future holds compared to the dominance that came before them.

A few days back also saw the return of the three Tsalala Males who were seen in the company of some of the Mhangeni sub-adults AND a Birmingham male, who were all feeding on a impala that had been stolen from a male cheetah. When questioned as to what had happened during that sighting, Don Heyneke’s only remark was, “I have no idea what just went down!”

The mystery of Lion's lives continue to fascinate us!
How much time we spend read and learn about them.. they continue to enthrall us!!

Update: An update on the Southern Pride - they are currently 8 members: 2 adult females, 3 male subs (including the young Charleston male), 1 female sub and 2 cubs.

I think it all comes down to the current lack of big game, both the Mhangeni sub-adults and the Tsalala Males have been clearly struggling to find food it's always surprising how the lack of food and water changes animal behavior and produces some interesting interactions that wouldn't be possible otherwhise.

It's specially weird because it was an impala so many lions fighting or interacting over an impala just bizarre.

Who knows. 

At this point I think it was mere coincidencde, both were hungry and took advantage of that kill. But if the Tsalala males feel tolerant, then maybe the youngsters will follow them as stay as a unit, but then it's all relative, anything could happen and if, say, the Birmingham males come back and chase all of them off then they could just disband and go off each on their own direction.

3 male lions proclaiming their stake of Africa. They are newcomers to the northern Sabi Sands, making the lion dynamics in the area very interesting!!!

We found three male lions fast asleep on the sand. These are not the resident territorial males but a new coalition to the area known as the AVOCA Males. We spent a short time with them before hearing that a male leopard had been seen nearby that had disappeared.

We spent 30 minutes trying to help relocate the leopard but the lush grass made this difficult and we decided to head back to the lions before dark. We managed to get some back-lit shots of the lions as they slowly woke up, yawned and stretched. After a good hour with the lions we headed back to camp for a well deserved dinner.

"After a long wait I finally got the opportunity to get to Leopard Hills in the Sabi Sands. We had an amazing sighting this morning as 9 lions pulled down a large female buffalo . It was an amazing experience to watch them devour the buffalo and as you can see this young male was definitely keeping an close eye on our vehicle."
