RE: Big Cat's Canines and Claws - Spalea - 06-30-2018 @GrizzlyClaws : About #1389: I believed that the lion's fang was always narrower at the bottom of the root, you showed me in such and remarkable cases it wasn't. So, by reading you an other important determining factor is that the tiger's fangs have a smoother texture. Thus, by teaching them we could determine the difference between lions' fangs and tigers' fangs, and therefore to distinguish them, right ? The tiger: "killer with the velvet fangs". I 'm joking. I come just to look at the #1366. Yes, the subadult tiger's fang look lighter. But perhaps it's true for the subadult lion's fangs too. Do the fangs reach their definitive weight during their adulthood in both cases (among tigers and lions) ? It would be interesting, as concerns the set of lion you showed (with broader root), to see its global weight. The photo doesn't allow to read it clearly (199 grams ?). I believe to remember you to have told that the lion's fangs don't exceed 55 grams each, right ? Like the indochinese tiger's fangs, but lesser than the siberian tiger's fangs (up to 67 grams if my memory doesn't fail). RE: Big Cat's Canines and Claws - GrizzlyClaws - 06-30-2018 (06-30-2018, 12:51 AM)Spalea Wrote: @GrizzlyClaws : The older they become, the heavier fangs they got. BTW, I didn't say that the lion fangs won't exceed 55 grams, but they just don't often exceed 50 grams at 10 cm. So far, one of the densest fangs belongs to a 10.3 cm Amur tiger lower fang at 70 grams. A lion fang weighing 50 grams at 10 cm would be considered as a non-hollow fang. At the same scale, a 13 cm lion fang would weigh over 100 grams, and a 15 cm lion fang would easily weigh over 150 grams. RE: Big Cat's Canines and Claws - GrizzlyClaws - 06-30-2018 @Spalea The 70 grams Amur tiger lower fang at 10.3 cm is proportionally the densest fang I know so far, but it is not absolutely the heaviest. We don't known the weight of the largest tiger/lion fangs, but we can estimate it by using the scale of the densest fang available.
