Asian Pit Vipers - Ngala - 09-22-2017
"Pit Vipers" is a common name to refer to the subfamily Crotalinae, that count 18 genera and more than 150 species. Seven of this genera is present in Asia:

Trimeresurus malabaricus, commonly known as Malabar pit viper, rock viper or Malabar rock pit viper is a venomous pit viper species endemic to southwestern India. No subspecies are currently recognized.

"Back in 2015 I already found a Mangrove pitviper (Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus) in Trang. It was a worm-sized brown juvenile. (look i the comments section)
BUT this time, 2017, we found a big incredibly beautiful 87cm individual in the mangroves of Krabi. 4hours of searching totally payed off for this shot"

Sri Lankan green pit-viper- Trimeresurus trigonocephalus
moderately venomous pitviper species endemic to Sri Lanka.
It is arboreal and nocturnal, occasionally descending to the ground in search of food in the form of lizards, frogs, small mammals and birds. This sluggish pitviper is usually encountered on low shrubs during morning hours, However mostly occupies in grasslands and rain forests.

@Ngala : I would have never believed that some vipers could be so beautiful. With some such amazing colors... I had in mind the vision of european and african vipers. Quite astonished !

Dear @Spalea, I'm glad that someone appreciates these reptiles. The vipers of the these genus from Asia are incredible. For example, a species from Komodo island, Trimeresurus albolabris insularis, can having a beautiful light blue colour; another species from China, Trimeresurus mangshanensis, have an amazing mimetic pattern, which seems almost fake.
In Africa, the species of the Atheris genus have also a beautiful colours similar to these Asiatic species.
In Europe, the vipers of the genus Vipera have darker and dull colours, ranging from various shades of gray to brown or reddish, but we have a great number of beautiful chromatic variations (Melanic form, etc.).

Being not specialized towards vipers, I only precisely have in mind the most impressive species , viper of Gabon, viper Russell (in Africa), viper Orinoco (basin of the Orinoco) and because I'm french and living in Europa the asp.
All these species of viper have a common point: not to be as colored and beautiful as the species you showed here and I discover now thank to you. So, thank you !

@Ngala: I believe that it wouldn't be exaggerated to tell that the Asian continent is the paradise of the vipers (well a paradise... Everywhere the vipers have numerous natural predators). More than 150 species, often magnificently colored...
In fact, the Asian vipers remind me the frogs dendrobates in the Amazonian forest: splendidly colored but deathly dangerous (the tribes extract the curare from these frogs' skin). What do you think about ? Are we in view of a case of parallel development ? Same natural environment (equatorial forests), fragile but very dissuasive animals, their colours hiding a death trap.
